Know More about this tour

Created by the American heiress Peggy guggenheim (1898-1979), the museum acquired the majority of her works between the years 1938 and 1947, in Europe and in New York, with the advice of friends, artists, and art critics.

The American patroness exhibited her collection for the first time in Europe at the 1948 Venice Biennale. A year later she purchased Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an unfinished palazzo of the 18th century, where she would live for 30 years and where her museum is located today. At an international level, the collection is one of the most important collections of its kind, notable for the quality of its works and for its historic breadth: during the visit you can admire masterpieces of Cubism, Futurism, Metaphysical painting, European abstraction, Surrealism and American Abstract Expressionism by artists such as Picasso, Brancusi, Pollock, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Mir, de Chirico, Dal, and Calder.

In 2012, the Foundations holdings in Venice were enriched by 80 works of Italian, European and American postwar art bequeathed by the American collectors Hannelore B. Schulhof and husband Rudolph B. Schulhof. Artists represented in this donation include some whose works were already represented in Peggy Guggenheims collection and others whose work was not (such as Eduardo Chillida, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Jasper Johns and Tony Cragg).

The Peggy guggenheim collection also exhibits sculpture outdoors in its gardens and on its terraces, by artists such as Marino Marini, Alexander Calder, Germaine Richier, and Henry Moore.

The visit includes the permanent collection, the Hannelore e Rudolph B. Schulhof Collection and the Nasher Sculpture Garden.

It was great to be guided by an expert through this amazing gallery. We gained so much more from the experience by having Cecilia’s insights.
Many thanks... it was one of our Venetian highlights.

On Sept. 2nd at 2:30 PM we met our guide, a deeply knowledgable, committed and charming young intern with the Peggy Guggenheim Palace/Museum. She took us directly to the beautiful rooftop, where we had the entire balcony to ourselves! There she gave us Peggy's fascinating biography as we basked in the views of the boats, palaces and the Grand Canal.
With Peggy's background in our heads, we were then guided through a comprehensive tour of the paintings and sculptures that awaited us below. As my husband remarked to me later, "She not only showed us the paintings, she showed us how to look at them!" Her tour was an incredible experience, and set the tone for our entire visit in Venice. Thank you!

Our tour far outweighed any expectations that I had. The tour guide Carlotta was passionate about art and the Guggenheim and you left the museum with a new found appreciation for modern art and a wonderful understanding of Peggy's life and her amazing collection!!! A must do for any art lover!!!

Totally enjoyed this private tour. Fairly expensive but worth the personal touch that comes with that. Our guide provided a wealth of information that we would not have had just walking through the collection on our own. Thrilling to see the masterpieces in the collection.

The tour guide was super, we even had other not on our tour following along Olivia
The private tour got us into areas others did not get to see.
You could get very close to the art to study the works easily.

An excellent tour with a wonderful guide. The tour was a skillful combination of learning about Peggy Guggenheim herself and the modern art movement that she supported and promoted. Our sons of 13 and 15 years old said this was their favorite museum of the trip.
