Reconstruction took place under the supervision of Xu Da, one of the founding generals of the Ming Dynasty, who was responsible for building a Wall from Shanhaiguan in the east to as far as Mutianyu. The Ming pass at Mutianyu was officially proclaimed in 1404, where is would serve as an important symbol of protection from marauding nomads to the north.

This was our first day in China. Anson was amazing and very accommodating. Always had cold water waiting for us after every stop. And he took us to one of the best lunch we have EVER had. Because of Anson, and his stories, this was the best day for us in China.

Seeing the great wall was an exceptional experience and lunch at a local restaurant was very good. Our guide, Albert, was wonderful. I would give him the highest rating. He was very personable and knowledgeable. Albert spoke excellent English, and was able to discuss Chinese culture along with facts about the various sites. He seemed to enjoy his job and catered to our desires. We preferred to maximize our time at the great wall and hike a portion of the wall so Albert ensured that we had plenty of time at the great wall. The private tour bypassed the jewelry and other shops so we could focus on what we wanted to see. If you are not interested in the tourist shops, I would choose a private tour.

This was a fantastic day! Besides walking on the great wall and having a fantastic local lunch, we loved seeing the countryside between the Wall and the Ming tombs. The mountain villages, with their farming and collection of timber were most interesting. The Ming tombs were in an impressive environment, although not housing any actual relics.
A word or two about our guide, Alice. She was phenomenal! My husband needs to take care with steps and cannot walk as fast as others, which was why we chose a personalised tour. Alice chatted with information and watched and helped him at all times. The driver was very considerate, too. Exceptional service!

TERRIBLE GUIDE, VERY RUDE, DIDN'T GET WHAT WE PAID FOR. Driver hit a bus as we were leaving the hotel, then guide said it would be 1-2 hrs before new driver arrived, then she said we would take a taxi to meet the new driver, almost 1 hr after we were to start we were finally on the way. The guide and driver spent most of the tip talking to each other and ignored us. When we reached the tombs we were given a rushed 30 minute tour then whisked off to the lunch where the guide ordered for us and left us to sit with the driver at a different table. All around us other groups were sitting with their driver and guides. Then we were on to the Great Wall where the guide took us up in the cable car and then gave us 2 hrs to walk along the wall and told us where to meet her. We decided to walk only 1 hr so we would have time to stop at a few of the shops at the base of the wall. When we met the guide 1 hr. later she told us we did not have tome to shop or we would be stuck in traffic. Also we were to have the choice of the cable car or toboggan back down but the guide said we had to do the cable car because the toboggan was in a different spot. After waiting many months to do this trip it was huge disappointment not getting what we had paid for. I would never recommend anyone to book with this guide! Because of the delayed start time we had less than the expected 8-9 hour trip and were rushed to finish. We would have done better to just book a bus group tour instead.
