This tour was Weird! Honestly. The place where they have the buggy’s is super sketchy. Dead end road abandoned looking building. And our “Instructor” which I forgot what his name was wish I could remember but tall skinny German guy I believe. The buggy’s themselves are good old could use some paint but their good. Their a buggy. Has a ve motor and it is a 4 speed manual transmission. The shift pattern is an H pattern. If you don’t know how to drive stick please don’t book. When I went their way 2 other groups and 1 of them made our trip worse. The guy kept stalling and you can tell he clearly could t drive manual we had to keep stopping to wait for him. Oh and the tour guide has you drive through cow field and you end up getting cow poop all over urself, just a heads up. So our instructor which was an experience to deal with would go super slow the whole time I hardly ever left 1st gear and when he would signal to put it in 2nd gear we would go even slower made no sense so I would switch back to 1st gear. I mean the guy would always stop to take pictures at random times and proceed to drive super slow. I don’t get how this is called Xtreme Buggy because their IS NOTHING Xtreme about this tour. It was just so weird and don’t know how these people have 4.5 star rating on trip advisor I’m sure it’s their German friends that leave them all these 5 star reviews. Honestly I would never book with them, keep researching and book elsewhere. Oh and the last stop is going to Macao beach which is beautiful just make sure to ask your guide how long you will be their. I did and he said 30 minutes so I go order French fries with my daughter and then 8 minutes after the guy said we are leaving. Knowing I just asked and he said 30 minutes. This guy made our experience so weird and boring. We had fun based off how weird this experience was if that makes any sense. Beware though this is not XTREME BUGGY.

So, part of the reason that folks travel abroad is to experience different cultures and meet unusual and interesting people. At least, that's why we do it. Did I think that the interesting culture and interesting and unusual people that I was going to meet were a bunch of German speaking Austrian expats marketing dune buggy tours to a primarily German speaking audience? No, but that's what we got. So, this is an English language review but I'll give you a few tips. The owners speak German and English but market to the Germans. If you are an American, you are probably the only one. These are real old school 1970s dune buggys. There are other tours out there with Flintstones hats and Polaris ATVs and automatic transmissions, this isn't what you are signing up for. You went Xtreme. You are signing up for parts of a Volkswagen that was probably manufactured in 1973 bolted to a series of pipes welded together all of which is masquerading as a vehicle. A note about the staff. They're great, but they are Austrian or German and these folks aren't exactly known for their sense of humor. If you are American they will automatically assume that you can't operate a car with a manual transmission, and frankly currently there are good reasons for this as you can't really buy one in the US anymore, but the owner the older Austrian/German guy has a vested interest in you not tearing up his vehicles (livelihood) so expect to be interrogated. I was and had to explain the all auto thing was a post-Y2K thing and despite my good looks and winning personality I learned to drive in the 80s, with cars from the 70s, and because manuals were cheaper (then) drove them until the mid-2000s. But from the USA you don't get a pass like the Europeans. Even thereafter I was subjected to a lot of lessons about how to double clutch, why you need to clutch as you break, how not to grind gears, how to tell from the sound of the motor when to shift, etc. But not too bad, it was all good. And all manuals (especially notchy transmissions from VWs potentially older than the reader) are a bit of their own animal so no complaints. I won't get too much into the fun but it was the best thing we've paid for on a vacation. You get it all - you go into the countryside and see some culture, you go into some cities to see how the folks in DR really live, you go to a beach, this thing has it all. Follow their instructions and wear old clothes. You might want to bring a poncho in the event it rains... or something. At the end you are hauling tail in this contraption on a highway with a bunch or real actual crazy Dominican drivers around you, so you are dealing with crazy Dominicans and crazy Austrian/Germans. You did sign up for Xtreme! Great experience. Owner was handing beers to the Germans afterwards, complained and he begrudgingly gave the American one too. Took us back to the hotel. Good guy glad I met him, the guide was Austrian and was good too, was training a guy to handle the French and English, not as good but learning. Great excursion. If you are doing buggys, YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE A MANUAL but if you can do so this is the one to get. Highly recommended, best thing we've ever paid for and done on vacation. Had a wife and a 12-year old in the buggy with me. They agree. Enjoy!

The trip was amazing, professionally operated. Take a change of clothes, in case you need after. True off-roading if it’s been raining you’ll get a great experience as stated drive in old clothes. Charlie and his team are excellent. Would do full day next time

We did the Saona Island with Canta de la Playa option and it was a good excursion. But this buggy ride? This was something else all together. An excursion is supposed to be a way to explore the country you are visiting in a less then normal touristy way. And most of the time, they are good and you get some decent memories. Like Saona Island. A good day. And every once in a while, you can find an excursion that goes above and beyond what an excursion really is. It becomes an experience. Not just an excursion. It becomes memories that you still think about far down the line, how incredible that day was. This is one of those. My only regret is that I listened to some of the reviews that said a half day was enough. For us, it was not enough. We will be back to Punta Cana. And we will take advantage of one of the best excursions available in Punta Cana for the whole day experience. Thank you Angela and Rolf for a truly remarkable day. We hope to see you soon. Sidenote: I do not think they advertise this well enough but they use actual VW low RPM engines. These are real cars. And they are all manual transmission. Very fun to drive. They can travel on the highway and off road and everything. This is important to note as the majority of the other dune buggy excursions are big go-carts. And this is fine but XTreme Buggy allows you then to go places and distances you can not go in a go-cart. I mean, you get way way out there in the Dominican. Very cool. The downside to this is that the engines cost more to maintain so the cost is more for this excursion. You get what you pay for.

It was an awesome buggy tour, our guide (an owner) was extremely nice and we had a great drive through the country side to see the real Punta Cana. Plenty of mud and some other "stuff" made it one of our best excursions on any trip we've been. You will get dirty1!!! It avoids the tourist traps (like where the other so-called buggy tours go). You spend alot of time driving both back roads, farm paths and paved roads. Worth your time and money. Also, it was fun driving a 4-speed shift again!!! Thanks Angela and Rolf for a great time!!!

We had the best time on our xtreme buggy excursion! A few points to make sure your experience goes as smoothly as ours did. When you book, send a message via WhatsApp to the company. They respond promptly and we were able to confirm our pickup time and place easily. If you can, make sure to wear older clothes that you don't mind getting really dirty. Dryfit or water repellant fabric is a good idea so the mud/dirt doesn't set in. You will get dirt everywhere including in your hair lol!. We did use t-shirts for head and face protection but they do have bandanas and gaiters available for sale at the shop before the excursion starts. Water shoes are a better option than sneakers - the dead giveaway is that the guide was wearing them. They do provide goggles for eye protection. It goes without saying that you have tp be able to drive a stick- these buggies are awesome, unkillable little tanks! There is no ability to adjust the seats so if you are a shortie it may be tough for you but not impossible. Our safety briefing was done by Charley and Ralph was our guide. Both were excellent. Ralph took the best pictures and videos throughout the day so we didn't have to worry about taking any and for a minimal price we got the digital copies by the end of the day. The tour was conducted in both German and English and we were able to see a side of the DR that many tourists probably will not. There was no hard selling, hustling or visiting any typical tourist traps which I think is a great bonus. You do stop in a typical corner store and can purchase items but this is not a requirement. If you can, do the full day tour. Based on the professionalism of the company and the amount of fun we had on the half day, the full day would have been outstanding. We recommend this company and when we return to the DR we will definitely be back. Bring a plastic

This buggy tour was Awesome!! One thing I will say is your better off booking directly with them due to my tour company I booked with didn’t properly communicate the correct pick up time but as soon as I communicated with them on the morning of the pickup they got right back to me threw WhatsApp. So if you want to go on a no pressure tour that doesn’t push you to buy stuff from where they stop And actually watches your back while your at the beach to make sure your not being bothered, then this tour is definitely for you. There is another buggy tour that advertises at roughly half the price but booking with them you also drive only half the time if not less in their tour. This tour I would say we were driving for 3.5 hours out of the 4 hour tour. You may of read other reviews saying they are very harsh. In all reality they were the nicest group of people we ever done an excursion with. Basically speaking if you ever let someone use something of yours (tools, vehicles, etc) it’s the same situation here they just want to make sure you follow the rules and you know how to drive a manual transmission and your not going to damage their equipment. Myself personally even got talked to shortly after we started for not sharing the hand signals and that was my own personal fault. They offer a photo package with your tour guide who is constantly taking photos and videos and the best part is it’s only $20usd not like some other tours that I’ve been on I. The past and paid anywheres from $50+. There was one downfall of this trip and that was the 4 hours went by way to fast and was to much fun. If and when we go back to Punta Cana we will definitely be booking the full day tour.

Best dune buggy rides ever!! So much fun, plan to get dirty and wet!! We also had a ride in a party bus back to our hotel

  • 24-May-2022

One the best excursions I’ve ever taken. It is extreme, and you will get dirty. You have to be prepared (I.e. long sleeve shirt, Banda, Face covering, etc). Tour wraps up its stops at a really nice Beach, which is refreshing after the jungle tour! Highly recommended for those looking for a more extremed Off-road Dune Buggy experience. 5/23/2022

We booked through Viator and all this was good for was them taking our money without us going :( Xtreme buggy requires you to reconfirm the booking (that you already paid for) - 48 hours before you go. We tried contacting them over the weekend but were not able to get through. Our hotel concierge helped us finally got a hold of them on the Monday morning we were supposed to get picked up. The gentlemen was really nice and told us to WhatsApp him our details. We did this and then we were informed our reservation was cancelled and we wouldn’t be provided a refund since we did not confirm within the window provided. Wouldn’t reschedule us or refund us. This is a scam - if you’re not going to honor the reservation, issue a refund.
