Overview

Would you like to get to know the Ecuadorian cuisine while visiting? This half day tour takes you to the local food market in the historical centre and to a very cosy restaurant close to the Basilica where you will prepare your traditional Ecuadorian dishes. The Ecuadorian chef goes to the market with you and explains you about the endemic fruits and vegetables. You will be given a chefs hat, an apron and a mini recipe book with 3 dishes you will be cooking. These recipes that you will cook are traditional Ecuadorian dishes: Locro Quiteo, Encocado and a Chocolate soup. These three recipes were chosen because the ingredients used can be found all over the world. Therefore, you will be able to cook it once again in your own country for your family and friends.

The class was a very good experience! We started at the central market, tasting some local food along the way. Afterwords we went to the restaurant where I was able to prepare three dishes to eat. It was incredible food that I hope to make back at home!

I was initially unsure to whether I wanted to cook on my holiday (after all, I do it at home!), but it was included on our historic Quito trip, so I thought why not. It was much more interesting than anticipated, and we particularly enjoyed the guided trip through the market to find local fruit and vegetables (with tastings). The chef-guide was very interesting and clearly loved talking about Ecuadorian food. We didn't have much to do back in the kitchen; enough to keep us engaged without feeling it was just making another meal. Plenty of good ideas for vegetarians too. The whole market+cooking+ eating took us about 90-120 minutes, which was enough at altitude anyway. Tip: discuss dietary preferences upfront.

We booked this experience on the last day of our trip. Karen gave us a very nice guide through the market, followed by a 10 minute walk through the historic part of Quito to a nice hotel with an outdoor kitchen and courtyard where we cooked and ate the meal. You have to get your own taxi to and from but it’s fairly inexpensive and the market is easy to navigate. The meal was delicious and not too challenging to make.

Jose was the best - we spent 4 hours w him starting with the Central Market. I think he went over time but we made a great meal and enjoyed fabulous conversation.

Great service and great hosts. Food was fun to prepare and the team was very prepared. We enjoyed not only being able to cook, but to also share cultural information and practice our Spanish. Only down side - instructions are where to meet were not clear, so be sure to confirm ahead. Also, it would have been nice to get a copy recipes that we made. That said - we had a blast and I would definitely recommend this if you have an afternoon to spare.

Great experience. Vanessa and Rose did a great job! Food was delicious and can’t wait to make for the rest of our family!

My wife and I took this cooking class with Chef Edwin. While in Ecuador, we went to the Galapagos, the Amazon Rainforest, and celebrated the Fiestas de Quito. This was arguably one of our top experiences on the trip. Chef Edwin is very hospital and multilingual. He spent the first part making sure we were comfortable and plan out the menu with us. When we were ready, we took a tour of the markets where he and locals buy their groceries. Along the way, he shared and explained the Ecuadorian culture and history and asked us about ourselves. He taught us about the local fruits at the beginning of the tour and then at the end had use find specific fruits ourselves in a market as a quiz (so make sure you're paying attention). Back at the restaurant, the cooking setup was in a beautiful style building (similar to Andalusian style homes in Spain). Chef Edwin taught us new techniques and recipes for cooking, preparing, and displaying food that blew us away. And at the end, we got to have the food in a special and intimate setting.

I highly encourage you to take this class if you want to take part in an experience (not just vacation observing), have an interest in food, an interest in a group activity, or an interest in culture.

The trip to the market was great, seeing the different fruits, how the coconuts were rated, the vendors. The meal afterwards was tremendous. Wish Chef Edwin's English was a little clearer but the whole experience was worth it.

Chef Edwin took us shopping at the Central Market and several smaller establishments. He was very patient explaining the different ingredients and getting us samples. Then we prepared the meal ourselves with the chefs guidance - he would show us what to do and then stepped aside to let us prepare the meal. The results were excellent and delicious!
