Know More about this tour

The number of castles in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is unique in the world, and they are the reason why this stretch of river was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. On board the ship you can relax and watch as all these fascinating buildings pass you by. Enjoy the view from the ship of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and Stolzenfels Castle in Koblenz, the legendary castles Cat and Mouse, the medieval Marksburg Castle, Schnburg Castle or Stahleck Castle in Bacharach. To start your river excursion, check the timetable and head to any embarkation point. The cruise was nice to see several castles but the advertising it as a hop on and hop off cruise is extremely miss leading. If you hop off your off for the rest of the way up the river and you have to wait till that ship goes the rest of the way up and than you can get back on that ship going back to Mainz. So if you get off you do not get to see anything up the river from that point on.

We booked through another agency so that didn't go as smoothly as we wanted i.e. they never said where to go to meet boat and we just happened upon it as we were walking along the river.

It was a great experience both on and off the boat and we enjoyed it very much!!

We booked this tour from the states. We read reviews but could not fully understand some of the issues. Overall we were content with it all. BUT the description was a bit misleading. It says hop on hop off, which is true in a sense, BUT with only 1 boat going up the Rhine and the same boat coming back, you could only hop off once and hop on at the same location when it returns, anywhere from 45 minutes to hours later. The only way to actually visit multiple castles and not just see them from the boat is to use the boat, a train or taxi or even car.

The boat itself was fine. Food and drink. Not a lot of protection from the sun if you sat outside, and a hot day. A slide for the kids to keep themselves entertained. We ended up spending maybe 6 hrs on the boat total. Got off once and spent a couple of hours visiting the town and castle to give us an impression, BUT we had hoped to hop on and off to visit multiple castles. Not possible. The people on the boat, the staff, were also very helpful, or tried to be, to help us figure out the best possible way to see the most.

We started the trip in Koblenz and finished in Rudesheim. The trip was nice and relaxing. You need to exchange your tickets provided by before accessing the ship. You need to arrive 30 minutes prior to boarding.

Study the schedule, start early in the day, and plan in advance.
We were able to start in Koblenz at 9am, hop off at St Goar, board three hours later, continue to Bacharad, board two hours later and finally disembark in Rudesheim.

There is next to no detail on the actual booking detail or vendor website. We were able to scrape that there were 4 boats in operation from reviews. Also the ticket said departure time 8.30am to 8.30pm which would also seem to imply the crusie runs in a rotating fashion all day. Unfortunately when we turned up the closest port to frankfurt which was at mainz (75 minutes from Frankfurt as an fyi) we were told there was only one departure dialy from there and it was at 8.30am. Thus we lost our 160 aud in total with no compensation. What a disaster

We took the cruise from Koblenz to Bingen. The day we went was cloudy, but the views were still great almost as good as a Viking River Cruise commercial. The staff was pleasant and food service was good. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise and would do it again if we find ourselves in the region.

Travel Note: we had a Viator voucher which needed to be exchanged for a ticket. Although the voucher states an electronic version can be presented, the ticket agent really wanted a paper print-out. By accepting the electronic version, she was required to complete a form before she could give us the tickets.

May 2018 - Wonderful experience! The hop on/ hop off terminology is a bit misleading since you really need to look at the port schedules very closely. One boat travels up the Rhine and one travels down. Not all ports have convenient departure and return times. We ended up driving to the town of Rudesheim to have better departure times because Wiesbaden only had one departure time. Aside from the complexity of determining the departure time/place - the cruise was unbelievable! It was worth the trouble to se the beautiful castles and sites!

The Rhine River tour was Great. Awesome, Awesome. Only One Problem. 4 Boats and You Have No Clue Which One. Very Poor Instructions. I would rate the boat ride a 5. As far as the rest. I, was most Stressed. They get a Zero. We almost missed the boat.

The Viator voucher Rhine River 20 Castles.. was not what we expected. When we presented our voucher at Cologne, the ticket office clerk told us that to see the heritage section of the river, we would need to take a 2 hour train journey to Koblenz, presumably the nearest starting point for the 20 castles section of the river. Time did not allow this, so we took a day trip on the river. The Rhine that we saw was reasonably interesting, but not what we thought we had bought. We had only two seriously disappointing days on our 28 day Europe holiday, and this was one of them.
