Know More about this tour

Rtteln castle is in position on the southern edge of the Black Forest close to the Rhine, above the Wiese valley (near the modern town of Lrrach), and its extensive fortifications made it one of the most significant castles in south west Germany. Although first mentioned in 1259, the castle was probably first built long before then. It was the seat of the Lords of Rtteln (who first appear in the historical record in 1102), the most powerful and well-known noble family in the Lrrach region, a family which played an influential role in the affairs of nearby Basel in modern day Switzerland.

Fantastic views of the countryside. Worth the climb up and the stairs especially to the top of the tower. English translations on the wall plaques would have been helpful.

Beautiful maintained ruined castle. The view from the top is stunning. The wurst and beer from the bier garden were tasty and really cheap. I highly recommend. Just be aware that it is rocky, you need closed flat shoes, and there were no signs in English. Also, it is steep to climb up part of the path. The pick up and drop off were precisely on time.

Beautiful place and great food in the Beer Garden! Wear your walking shoes and have plenty of space on your camera!!

Great tour! Pickup onetime from our hotel. This is an on your own tour once you arrive. The guide gave us some great information before entering and we had a blast climbing all over the castle. Plenty of time to see everything and even relax at the end at the beer garden.

It was a beautiful day on the border of Basel and Germany. I loved the morning tour which allowed me to spend my own time to explore the castle ruins. The driver was so nice and very knowledgeable of the roads - a comfortable ride! Would highly recommend tour!
