Know More about this tour

King Philip II (the Spanish King who ruled from 1543 to 1551) will be waiting at Prncipe Po
station, on Platform 7, to welcome passengers to the historical Train that bears his name.
For 55 minutes, we will enjoy the pleasant journey to El Escorial station, at the feet of the
Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. During this journey, we will discover the way people
travelled by train in the 40s and get the chance to admire the powerful Diesel ALCO (American
Locomotive Company) engine.
Once we arrive in El Escorial, buses will be waiting to take us from the train station to the town centre of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (a 5-minute ride), where we will be offered a free drink. Shortly after, we will start our guided tour of the Monastery of El Escorial (Declared World
Heritage by UNESCO) and the town that surrounds it. This way, we will learn all about how people lived in those times in which Spain was called the Empire on which the sun never sets. The tour takes about 2 hours.

At the end of the tour, you can eat at one of the restaurants that offer us special discounts. Then you will have free time to appreciate the wonderful setting of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Once again, the buses will take us back to the train station to catch the train back to Madrid.

Traveler Reviews

I enjoyed this tour, but I don't speak Spanish, and the tour is only in Spanish. I was the only non-Spanish speaker on the tour the day I went. So just beware. The tour starts with a train ride to El Escorial. You are met by a tour guide dressed and acting as King Phillip II of Spain. But again, all his greeting and explanation is in Spanish. The train is mid-century vintage, not really that interesting. In the village of San Lorenzo the guests are given headsets for the guide's narrative during a walking tour. My guide was accommodating enough to give me a private synopsis each time after her explanation of what we were seeing. She was terrific, but I think this was above and beyond what should be expected on the tour. In the monastery, the tour company provided the audio/visual pad experience for me, which is available in many languages, while the others had a live guided tour. This wasn't a problem. The monastery/palace is AMAZING, and after the tour you have free time to shop in the small town or perhaps have lunch. There are a lot of wonderful looking small restaurants with indoor and a outdoor dining to choose from. I think if this tour company starts marketing some English language dates for the tour, it would rate 5 stars for me.
