Know More about this tour

This circular route begins and ends in Faial da Terra, in the Burguete area, and takes about 3 hours to walk. The trail begins next to the stream Ribeira do Faial da Terra. The cobbled path goes up for about 300 metres until you come the abandoned village of Sanguinho. In this village, which has been restored, you can find typical traditional buildings, such as small farm holdings. The name of the village comes from sanguinho, one of the endemic plants of the Azores and Madeira, which is believed to have grown in profusion in this area, and you can still see specimens of it alongside the path. Through woods of acacia and Victorian box we follow the path towards the Salto do Prego waterfall. After observing and having lunch by the waterfall we come back to Faial da Terra by the stream. Walkers are requested not to pick any fruit or vegetables along this trail.

Our walk was organised by Geo Fun Tours and our guide Deni was excellent. We had a light rain shower as we started our climb up into the forest, which meant that the small basalt cobble stones forming the initial path, which zig-zagged its way up the hill, was very slippery. Before long however the path eased and the weather improved. The forest, often referred to as their "jungle", was fascinating, with examples of tree ferns, eucalyptus and other very ancient trees. Later we discovered an amazing waterfall, before eventually completing the circular walk back down to the local village. I can thoroughly recommend this lovely walk.

I booked this for my father and his friends ... all in their 70's and very fit ... they said the views were amazing and beautiful - however they found the hike quite daunting.... physically it was difficult for them as well as some areas could be dangerous depending on how slippery it was ... I think you should let people know in advance that their physical abilities will be tested and those afraid of heights may want to reconsider .... OTHERWISE they said the views and guides were wonderful!
