Huff your way up Santa Ana (Ilamatepec) volcano, El Salvadors highest, on this full-day tour in Cerro Verde National Park. Walk through a windy cloud forest, and at the crater, capture views of a glimmering lagoon and panoramas of Lake coatepeque, Izalco and Cerro Verde volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean. Upgrade to include a guide, who will lead you on this moderately difficult hike and explain the geology, lush vegetation and village ruins you see along the way. A box lunch and round-trip transport by private vehicle from San salvador hotels are included.

Know More about this tour

Your objective on this tour: Climb to the crater of El Salvadors highest volcano Santa Ana, also known as Ilamatepec or Mother Hill, 7,822 feet (2,384 meters) above sea level and 2 million years old. This unpredictable volcano located in Cerro Verde National Park, also known as Parque Nacional Los Volcanes, last erupted in 2005. In addition to Santa Ana, other volcanoes located here include Cerro Verde, 1.5 million years old, and Izalco, which first burst lava in 1770.

After you're chauffeured from your hotel in the comfort of a private vehicle, relax on the drive west for over an hour to the park. Upon arrival, you can choose to tackle this moderately difficult trek up Santa Ana volcano and navigate tricky sections on your own. (Park staff are available to point out directions to the trail.)
Or upgrade to enjoy the convenience of a knowledgeable guide, who will remove guesswork on the trail and enrich your experience with informative commentary on the history and geology of the park. (See full trail description in Itinerary below.)

Optional Upgrade: Private GuideFollow your guide on an initial 30-minute descent and then a steady, hot climb for another two hours, and learn about the local geology and dense green vegetation you see along the way. Your guide also points out large pieces of wood, remains of a mountainside village after the 2005 eruption, now part of the peaceful natural landscape.

Your guide paces your hike at approximately four rest breaks at scenic locations, allowing you to fully admire the changing landscapes, which include sapphire-blue Lake Coatepeque, a crater lake in eastern Coatepeque Caldera.

Once you emerge from the tree line, watch your footing on the pebbly terrain. Most of the trail has been fenced in, but some areas are still open to sheer drop-offs. Your guide advises when you should proceed carefully.

Reach the top of Santa Ana volcano amid blustery winds and a hovering cloud cover, and stand on a barren, flat ridge at the periphery of the crater. Look down into the bowels of the volcano and see an emerald-green lagoon steaming with sulphuric water.

Pull out your camera and snap photos of the stunning all-star panorama featuring Lake Coatepeque, Izalco and Cerro Verde volcanoes, as well as the Pacific Ocean. Find a spot on the ridge and open up your box lunch, usually a sandwich, fruit and drinks.

Note: Although some beverages and a box lunch are provided, bring plenty of water and snacks of your own.

After this leisurely hour-long break, follow your guide down the trail on a speedy 1.5-hour trek back to where you started. Climb back aboard your private vehicle and arrive at your San Salvador hotel in the evening.
