Know More about this tour

Departing Tauranga we pass through Te Puke - the kiwi fruit capital of the world, and through forests beside Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua. Your driver/guide will provide information on the destinations you could visit in Rotorua and the best options.

There are 5 main stopping points in Rotorua and we circulate 4 times during the day. We also offer a final collection point at the Agrodome to fit in with their last show if needed. We then return to Tauranga by a different route, through forests, into deep gorges, past farms and kiwifruit orchards.

There is no obligation to visit any destination, just cruise on the coach, take a walk around as there are plenty of things to see for free, visit the shops, buy a picnic to enjoy by the lake front and much more.

The Rotorua Explorer visits the following 5 drop off and collection points:

1. Te Puia (also adjacent to Te Whakarewarewa thermal village, a 5-minute walk)
2. Rotorua Information Centre [ i-site] in the center of the city.
3. Rotorua Lake Front - adjacent to Volcanic Air helicopter and flight center and also the Kawerau Jet boat offices.
4. Polynesian Spa - a world famous natural geothermal spa, which is also close to the Government Gardens, Bath House Museum and the Blue Baths.
5. Skyline Skyrides Rotorua - also adjacent to Rainbow Springs (2-minute walk) and OGO, another version of the famous ZORB rides, a 10-minute walk.

You will be given a full info sheet on the day with a timetable that suits your tour departure time, which does vary from ship to ship. We also offer a discount of 10% off the usual ticket prices at our featured destinations.

We can also drop passengers at the River Rats and Raftabout rafting centre for their Kaituna rafting trips which is on the way to Rotorua. After rafting they will either drop you back in Rotorua City where you can join the shuttle back to Tauranga or meet the shuttle on its run back to the ship on the Old Tauranga Road if you have taken one of their longer excursions.

Want to try the amazing zip lining with Canopy Tours in Rotorua, then we can also drop you at their base after the first stop at Te Puia. We will then arrange to collect you at one of the above stops for your return to Tauranga.

If you wish to visit other activities not listed above, then you can often arrange transport to their activity at the Rotorua i-site. These destinations could include:

Agroventures - adventure activities
Hells Gate - geothermal valley and authentic mud bathing experience.
Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu - geothermal sites about 20 minutes south of Rotorua.

  • A good way to see this area of New Zealand. Our driver was great, took a sidetrip to a waterfall which was beautiful. He basically allowed the tourist to determine where the bus would go, drop us off and pick us up on our schedule. We went to the Sky Park in Rotorua...forget its actual name where we rode the sleds several times down the track. It was beautiful and a very fun experience. Both my wife and I are over 60 and it was easy sledding.

We could have booked the same tour through our Cruise Ship but again Viator saved us a significant amount of money on all of our tours in New Zealand.

  • This worked out very well. The driver was very knowledgeable and helpful about where we could go. He dropped different people off at their choice of venue and then picked us up to go to somewhere different. All very flexible and easy. He came back a different route so we saw more of the scenery.

  • It wasn't really a hop on hop off arrangement . You had to tell the driver before you went where you wanted to go with a choice of 5 stops and then he would arrange when he could drop you off and pick you up.This meant that quite a few passengers spent long periods of time travelling on the bus and not being able to get off and just experience the area. I had read this before so I knew what I wanted and where I needed to go but so many others on the bus didn't and had a lot of wasted time. When you are short of time it is important to get the most from your day especially if you are only there for a day as a cruise stop.

  • The driver was friendly, very informative and couldn and #39;t be more helpful.

  • You can't see everything in one day so this is a good way to pick and choose the sites that are the most important. Driver was very accommodating in letting passengers go to different sites and then picking them up. Much cheaper than the cruise ship tours.

  • Schedule timing was off for Saturday.

  • The bus guide was friendly and knowledgeable about all stops and provided interesting information about the area to Rotorua . He accommodated everyone's request and made suggestions based on their interests. Our group went to Whakarewarewa Thermal Village and it was excellent.

  • When I think of a Hop-On/Hop-Off bus, I think of a bus that circles a city and continuously stops at about a dozen key attractions. The guests can look out the window until they see something they want to do, then hop off, go see that attraction, and be assured the bus will be back soon to pick you up once you're done. This tour is NOT a Hop-On/Hop-Off bus. Instead, the bus takes you exactly where you want to go, and picks you up exactly when you want to be picked up. Good idea, but impractical if you're not familiar with Rotorua and don't know exactly what you want to do.

As we boarded, the very nice driver asked every group where they were going. This met with a ton on indecision -- we were all tourists who didn't know exactly what we wanted to do. I told him we wanted to go to Wai-O-Tapu, and he explained he couldn't take me there because it was too far away and we really didn't have enough time. Okay... the description said we could go to Wai-O-Tapu and that's exactly why I booked this tour, but whatever.

As each group disembarked at their chosen destinations, the driver asked us how long we needed before we picked him up. Again, we're tourists - we have no idea how long each attraction will take.

Ultimately, transportation was pleasant and on-time, hence a mediocre review. But if I had realized that this was not a true Hop-On/Hop-Off bus that allowed you to see the city, I would have just rented a car and gone exactly where I wanted to.

  • Friendly bus driver, gave us a great tour and was great at handling 10 different requests from the people on his bus. He got us to our destination on time and picked us up when he said he would. Great service, would book again. Thanks!

  • Rotorua is at least one hour from the port of Tauranga, so even though we did a tour, I don't recommend this for cruisers, since it takes too much time to get there to give you enough time to do the several things that are recommended. The tour was very nice and we got tosee TePuia, the geothermal park and to the Polynesian spa where w soaked in the thermal springs. Heaven!
