Siena is one of the most beautiful and best preserved medieval cities in the world. It sits on three hills surrounded by Chianti and olive groves and is famous for its old, steep and twisted redbrick lanes. A walk down the narrow lanes and steep alleys of this city, one can see traces of medieval architecture, dozens of Gothic palaces, pastry shops, Piazzas and museums. The history of the city dates back to the period between 900–400 BC and it retains its ward-centric culture from medieval times. The city has been divided into wards, each ward represented by an animal and has its own border and distinct identity. Ward rivalries are common and can be most rampant during the famous horse race “Palio” which is organised twice a year at the Piazza del Campo. The event is attended by large crowds, and is widely televised and is often considered to be a brutal and a dangerous competition for the horse and the bare-back rider alike.
Siena also carries a rich tradition of art and artists including Duccio and his student Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti and Martino di Bartolomeo. A number of well-known works of Renaissance and High Renaissance art still exist in galleries or churches in Siena. Some of the best tours in Siena include a tour to the Siena Cathedral which is a 12th-century masterpiece of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture or the Siena Cathedral Pulpit which is an octagonal 13th-century masterpiece with sculpted lion pedestals and biblical bas-relief panels. One could take a guided tour of the famous Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped town square housing important museums or visit the original headquarters of the Monte Dei Paschi di Siena, one of the oldest banks in continuous existence showcasing its remains in possessions. The city looks almost exactly like it used to in the 14th century and offers a perfect way to slip into the rhythms and atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
