Know More about this tour

Leave central Braov by air-conditioned car or minivan and travel north with your guide into the Transylvanian countryside. As you travel, listen to fascinating facts about Romania’s history and admire the passing scenery of rolling hills, age-old villages and pine forests.
After roughly 1.5 hours, arrive at Viscri, a historical village that’s hardly changed in centuries. Discover how Prince Charles owns a property here and visit Viscri church, one of Transylvania’s UNESCO-listed fortified churches.
Built by Saxon colonists in the 1300s, this remarkable sanctuary is encircled by white stone battlements that lend it a fairy tale appearance. Go inside (own expense) with your guide to explore the bastions, covered corridors and church, and learn how the fortifications, an incredible 16 feet (five meters) thick in places, were built to defend against invading Turks.
Continue to the medieval, UNESCO-listed town of Sighioara, one of the best preserved in Europe and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration behind Dracula. Enjoy a walking tour of its jewel-like center to see its 14th-century Clock Tower, Church on the Hill, and Citadel, an atmospheric web of cobbled lanes and crooked walls.
After a little free time to have lunch (own expense) or explore Sighioara independently, travel on to Rupea Fortress, one of Transylvania’s most impressive medieval castles. Built in the 1300s, this hilltop fortress has a lower, middle and upper level, with ramparts and terraces coiling up to the summit.
Head inside (own expense) and inspect the curtain walls and red-roofed towers on a guided tour. See the original 196-foot (60-meter) well, whose water is still drinkable, and learn how Saxon colonists used Rupea as a village in the 1700s, giving it its own market, chapel and meat storerooms.
Having explored here, return to central Braov where your tour ends.
Please note: The order of activities as described above may be subject to change on the day of your tour.

  • I really enjoyed tour, my guide was very nice and told me not only about the places in Romania I was visiting, but also about the whole history of the country. The region was also very interesting and historical. Highly recommended for any traveler to Transylvania. Your eyes will be opened to a region of the country that is very unique and historical.

  • Absolutely excellent. Our guide Mihai, from Active Travel Brasov, was well informed, spoke excellent English, and went the extra mile to make our day trip perfect including some unscheduled stops. The sights are amazing, Viscri is only really reachable by 4x4 vehicle due to poor road condition, and it is a must see on any visit to Transylvania. We had Mihai for another trip whilst in Brasov, and we loved his company.

  • Friendly guide and on time as expected. Also highly recommended sites.

  • Seeing these sites was fantastic! I enjoyed the trip very much! My tour guide Mihai was great. He made the trip fun and informative and added his personal knowledge and love of Romania to the tour. He went above and beyond to make sure every question was answered and I saw all that I could see at these destinations. I love how Viator uses the local people to tour you around. Their love of the region and their knowledge truly adds to the visit! Thanks Viator! These places are a MUST SEE!!

  • Dan was the absolute best. Great guide who will make sure you enjoy every minute of your trip. Loves to sing and speaks many languages. Will not disappoint on this trip. Lots to see and enjoy, just be prepared for a lot of uphill walking

  • Amazing tour. Cristian, the guide, was very experienced and had a lot of knolegde about Romania. I recommend this tour for everyone

  • Amazing places discovered during this tour. Sighisoara is one of the better places I have visited in Romania. Medieval town, people still lives there. The tour guide Kartsi Balázs was excellent. We saw all the secrets in the fortified churches. Rupea is amazing and the route to go to Viscri is really lovely. It worth the visit!

  • We toured with Charlie from Active Travel Day Tours, who was knowledgeable and engaging in every way possible. We were also fortunate to get his services for our Brasov tours on consecutive days. For this tour we visited Rupea Fortress which was similar to Rasnov Fortress, saw the fortified church in Viscri and had the pleasure of driving past Prince Charles of England's Romanian retreat home, and ended the day in the lovely city of Sighisoara. The highlight of the trip was definitely Sighisoara with her clock and guild towers, and her church on the hill. Charlie was with us every step of the way, including the long flight of stairs leading up to the church on the hill but don't worry there is a rest point every 7 steps. He also brought us to the famed shop of the Spoon Maker where we purchased an intricately carved wooden spoon. Do sign up for this tour if you can allocate another day-trip from Brasov - in our opinion Bran/Rasnov/Peles should be the 1st tour to get.

  • Dan was a great guide, very patient with us when we got lost and kept the trip late. He sang for us, showed us a part of Romania that was both beautiful and very different from home and was a funny travelling companion. An excellent day out , full of value. Thanks Dan
