Stop At: Musee de l'Orangerie, Paris, Ile-de-France

Situated in the beautifully manicured Tuileries Gardens, the Orangerie transformed into a museum in the early 20th century when Pariss over-crowded museums needed new galleries. The Orangerie most famously housesthe series of various waterlilies Monet granted to France thanks to his friendship with George Clemenceau, which earned their own private gallery space. The expansive collection of 19th century and early 20th century paintings features works by other famous Impressionists and those who came after. View Cezannes studies of fruits and flowers, seductive portraits by Matisse, and various phases of Picassos career through several nudes. Other artists including Modigliani, Renoir, and Utrillo, all make the Orangerie a must-visit for anyone who appreciates French art and the Impressionist movement.

The Orangerie itself is absolutely amazing. It will be a regular stop for me ongoing. The experience was made even better by our guide Lucien. I needed a very specific experience because I was traveling with my 5 year old daughter. My guide needed to be flexible around her needs and our timing. He was great. They got along swimmingly, and Lucien was able to adjust as the situation changed. However, I'd still want him as a guide even without kids because he was an absolute wealth of information. He is very knowledgeable about the history, paintings and theory. Most importantly, he was able to adjust to my needs - whether I wanted more understanding or more time to take in what I was seeing without comment. I hope to book with him again, either in Paris or in other locations where he guides.
