Know More about this tour

You'll be picked up from your centrally located Queenstown hotel. Travel on Gorge Road, pass Arthurs Point Hotel, cross Edith Cavell Bridge following the miners route up towards Coronet Peak with great views over Wakatipu Basin.

Shortly after you reach the saddle at 975 meters (3199 foot) above sea level, the highest point of the journey, opening a first spectacular view of Mount Aurum and what still lies ahead of you. The 4WD vehicle continue to travel along Skippers Road past Hells Gate. Special points of interest are the Zoo of Rocks as well as the old Skippers Road on which the Goldminers used to travel. Travelling down you pass Castle Rock, Bus Scratch Corner and Welcome Home Pub - or better said, pass its remains.

Then on to Bells Hill which gives a second view of the richest River in the World - Shotover river. After passing the well named points of interest such as Pinchers Bluff, Devils Elbow and Deep Creek, the blue skies, the sun, and the River create memorable pictures.

Before heading back to Queenstown, the next stop is the picnic spot. Here everyone will enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with kiwi biscuits and home-made cheese served on crackers while sitting in comfortable chairs. The group can literally sit back and relax looking over the canyon.

For those who are interested in the movie spots of 'Lord of the Rings' this picnic spot will be of special interest, as you look down onto the location of this famous scene where Frodo can escape the Black Riders with the help of Arwen and the forces of the river.

Everything was a highlight. The ride on the van was so much fun. If you're leery of heights like me, just look straight ahead. You will see the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Our driver, Wolfy, was fun and knowledgeable. He kindly made a stop at our hotel for a toilet break and then dropped us off downtown.

This experience was the highlight of my week. The drive down skippers canyon road felt like a fun teaser to the adrenaline you get to experience on the Jetboat, not to mention it’s cool to learn about the gold mining history along the way too. The jetboat itself was phenomenal. Getting so close to the walls of the canyon kept my heart racing the whole time, and the 360 degree turns were a blast too. When we were finishing the ride, a little girl on the boat asked for one more spin to which the driver happily obliged 😊 highly recommend this experience!!

Hang on to your hats, you are in for a wonderful experience. This has got to be one of the most adrenaline drives anywhere and Wolfy is the ultimate driver and repository of information regarding skippers Canyon. I recommend this tour to everyone, you will love it.

This tour was the highlight of our trip to Queenstown. The journey down Skippers Canyon had been on our ‘to do’ list for years and is one of those activities that makes New Zealand a bit different. Our guide, Wolfie was an extremely competent driver and a mine of information on the geography and history of Skippers. When we said that some of my wife’s ancestors were early settlers in Skippers he went out of his way to discuss the history of the settlement. We found the graves of my wife’s great great grandparents. So many thanks to Wolfie; the tour was excellent and is highly recommended.

Unbelievable experience with steep narrow winding road and views are absolutely stunning. Thrilling experience which was one of our best tour in New Zealand. We booked two trips in one, Skippers Canyon with thrilling jet boat ride. The driver was safe and informative.

This tour was the highlight of my New Zealand holiday. The scenery was incredible inspiring. Our tour guide was friendly, full of information which he shared in an interesting way. the drive is not for the fainthearted though as the dirt road is narrow with an incredible cliff on one side and sheer drop into the canyon the other. Nonetheless it was well worth every minute.
