Know More about this tour

Enjoy a convenient morning pickup from your Avignon hotel, then meet your guide and hop aboard your air-conditioned minivan for the drive out into the Camargue countryside. Home to ancient settlements and a huge variety of wildlife including over 400 different species of birds, the Camargue is widely considered among the most beautiful corners of the country.

First, travel to the medieval walled city of Aigues-Mortes, one of the finest examples of 13th-century military architecture in Europe. Wander along the cobbled streets with your guide, learn of the citys fascinating past and see top sights such as the Eglise Notre-Dame des Sablons.

Hop aboard a train and head out onto the salt marshes outside the city, where salt has been harvested since the 8th century. During your 1-hour train trip through the marshes, listen as your guide explains how the salt is harvested and gain insight into why the seawater here is a peculiar shade of pink.

Back in Aigues-Mortes, enjoy free time for lunch at one of the traditional cafs or restaurants (own expense) then cross the Petit Rhne River by cable-ferry on your way to the seaside village of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer.

Explore Les Saintes Maries de la Mer at your leisure and dont forget to visit its impressive church, a popular pilgrimage site for centuries. Perhaps take the opportunity to climb up to the ramparts encircling the churchs roof (own expense) and admire panoramic views out over the Camargue plain. If that sounds like a little too much effort, simply spend your free time relaxing on the beach or bathing in the cool Mediterranean Sea.

Continue on through the Camargue to the UNESCO-listed town of Arles, by the banks of the mighty Rhne River. Admire diverse birdlife such as egrets, grey herons, swans and pink flamingos on route, and wildlife like black bulls and white horses.

In Arles, make the most of the free time to explore at your leisure. Discover a wealth of important Roman remnants including the 1st-century Arles Amphitheatre (own expense) or simply sit in the sunshine and soak up the atmosphere. Choose also to visit the Muse de l'Arles et de la Provence Antique or Eglise St-Trophime. Entrance fees are all at your own expense.

When the time comes, hop back aboard your minivan for the return journey to Avignon, where your day trip concludes.

  • This was a very enjoyable trip. We got to see the Carmargue horses , black bulls and the flamingoes. Our guide was very informative and friendly

  • Though this particular tour cancelled, I was given a similar tour that did not include Wife Mort. The tour I did taken was fabulous! I saw the actual rice fields I had seen on TV when I was18, ducks, flamingos and other water foul. Also the black dulls and white Camargian horses. Our visit to St Marie's de la Mer was interesting and educational. A good vacation day out in the country!

  • A little bit rush but worth to join the tour. We saw the white horses, the bulls but not the Flamingoes not in summer season. Nice and friendly driver/ guide. Recommended if you have only limited time but want to see much more outside the Avignon region.

  • Probably not people's first choice for a tour from Avignon, but if you have the time, I highly recommend this fun day away from the crowds. See the amazing salt ponds and learn how they retrieve and process the salt for various culinary and industrial purposes. Then on to two small villages--the quaint medieval town of Aigues-Mortes and the seaside town of Saintes-Maries-De-La-Mer. It was delightful to have just three of us on the tour and our guide Amelie was wonderful. Arles was the last stop and a tease, because we could have used so much more time there, but it was a great way to glimpse some of its highlights before returning for a full day. I was prepared, but didn't need, repellent for mosquitos in the Camargue, and was unprepared for the pleasant visit with the while horses of the area. All in all, a really nice day.

  • Excellent tour and tour guide. Thoroughly enjoyed the day, saw a lot of interesting things and learnt a lot. Very professional and friendly guide.

  • Ride through the salt marshes wasn't good, but the rest of the tour was good. I would rather have more time in Aigues-Mortes to walk around the walls and more time in Arles to see the town.

  • Even though it was so hot I had a great day. Guide, Amelie, was a joy

  • The tour of the salt marshes on the train was too long, especially as the commentary was entirely in French. Better to cut it back or even delete it and allow more time in Aigues-Mortes and Arles,

Aigues-Mortes was great - real mediaeval flavour - and we would have loved more time there.

Les Saintes Maries de la Mer was very good, and we had about the right amount of time there.

Arles was fascinating, but really needed another half-an-hour to explore it adequately.
    Our guide was brilliant.
