Hungarys capital, Budapest, is famous for its hot springs. Many people visit Hungarys famous thermal baths, but only a few know that the hot water rushing up from deep underground created something else too. In the limestone mountains under Budapest, the heated water formed a huge cave system which is thought to be more than 100 km long. The spas and caves of Budapest are planned to be declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The longest cave of Budapest is the 20.1 km long Pl-vlgyi-Mtys-hegyi cave system located in the Duna-Ipoly National Park. It is a real multi-level labyrinth system with most of its chambers under the residential districts of Budapest.
If you arent claustrophobic you can apply for our regularly scheduled cave tours which are guided by qualified caving guides. During the 2.5-3 hrs long tours you will often have to climb on walls and crawl through narrow passages so you have to be prepared for adventure.
The tours lead though natural parts of the cave, with the supervision of professional caving guides. All the necessary equipment - overall, helmet, light - is provided. You can change your clothes in changing rooms. Though one has to crawl, climb, scramble or creep many times during the tour, no previous experience in caving is needed.
Tour guides are qualified members of the Hungarian Caving Association.

Tour guide was great.. remembered all our names and chatted and made us all feel comfortable and very informative and attentive as we crawled thru narrow caves.. I'd recommend bringing extra shoes..I bought water shoes with rubber soles so they were flexible and got a bit muddy but it wasn't wet.. they have toilets, lockers to place your belongings before you leave and provide a helmet and light and overalls. You should wear.a light long sleeve shirt for girls and a tshirt for fellas and sweatpants or leggings to move easily thru the caves.

Tour guide was very knowledgeable and fun and funny. Overall I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to change a bit their activities.

This was a full-on caving experience with an excellent guide. Make sure you are OK with narrow squeezes and some basic climbing. Highly recommended.

This was great fun, was bit worried when arrived and everyone else in the group was at least half my age (i'm 50) , but made no difference, the guide was great (sorry can't remember his name) told lots of stories and made the whole experience really fun,

Fantastic but exhausting. Edith was great! Great information and humor. It is fairly physically strenuous so make sure you're in shape enough to pull your body through extremely small openings. Would have been nice to have water to drink but couldn't take anything on the tour.

Edith was an excellent guide, very kind, patient, helpful, knowledgeable, great sense of humour, and her English was excellent. The tour itself was an interesting experience, although if you're looking for an impressive display of beautiful limestone stalactites and stalagmites, this isn't the tour for you. This is very much a 'sport' caving tour, with lots of crawling, creeping, and sliding on your butt. Gloves are highly recommended, as well as knee pads, if you're sensitive. Also note that the distance is incorrect. It isn't 20 KM. It's less than 2 KM round trip. We pointed that out to Edith, so it may be corrected now.

We were a group of no more than 8-9 people, all young adults 21-29 years old. Our guide was quite a pro and funny. It was quite a once in lifetime experience to do caving for around 3 hours under the city of Budapest.
I recommend this activity if you are up to for some sports-like challenge. -
Seriously limited by one of the participants who was afraid of everything.

What a fun adventure in Budapest!! Our caving group was very small, just five of us total. Our guide, Edith was very friendly, and super well informed about the cave system she is actually a geologist. When we arrived, she offered helped us get our gear, which includes the caving suit and a helmet. WEAR OLD SNEAKERS! Your shoes will get muddy and smelly from the cave system, and even with two washes they are still a little funky. Bring shoes you can just throw out afterwards. You spend about 2 hours inside the actual cave, climbing and sliding and exploring. Edith has facts about every room and lets you spend enough time to take as many photos and videos as you want. If you are claustrophobic, I wouldn't recommend this tour as there are a lot of spaces that are small that you have to go through in some locations, there are alternative ways to get around, but not everywhere. Our group had great energy, and we were all laughing and joking along the way, and helping each other if we ever needed it. It is a unique thing to do in Budapest, and I would 100 do it again!
