Know More about this tour
Your driver and guide will collect you from your central Ho Chi Minh City hotel around 7:30-8am for morning departures or 12:30pm-1pm for afternoon departures. Along the 90-minute journey from the city, admire rice paddies, water buffalo, and villagers drying noodles by the roadside from your air-conditioned minivan.
At Cu Chi, you'll watch a movie about the Vietnam War and the Cu Chi Tunnels. Your guide will further explain the history of this massive network of tunnels with a combined length of over 155 miles (250 kilometers). Viet Cong fighters excavated the network during the Vietnam War as a defensive strategy against US troops, emerging from concealed trapdoor exits to do battle: 'tunnel rats' from anti-Vietnam forces descended into them to fight.
The tunnels are between 20 inches (50 centimeters) and 3 feet (1 meter) high, allowing only enough space for a person to crawl or walk bent over. They lie beneath 10-13 feet (3-4 meters) of soil, sufficient to support the weight of a 55-ton (50-tonne) tank and endure damage from light cannon and bombs. The branching network held dormitories, meeting rooms, hospitals, bomb shelters, and kitchens, and was full of traps for invading tunnel rats.
After your movie, you'll get the chance to explore selected tunnels – some have been enlarged for visitors, but none are suitable for people with back problems or claustrophobia – and visit the underground hospital, kitchen, and bunkers.
Next, you'll visit the on-site shooting range. For an additional charge, and at your own risk, you can fire your choice of weapons from carbine rifles all the way through to M16s, AK-47s, and machine guns. After around three hours at the site, you'll hop back in the minibus, arriving back at your hotel around 2pm or 7pm, traffic depending.
