Overview

Jiankou Great Wall is located in Badaohe village in the northwest of Huairou County in Beijing, about 30 kilometers away from Huairou County Town. It is also situated at Bohai Town (North part at Badaohe, while south part at Bohai). Jiankou Great Wall connects to Mutianyu's East side of the wall, and it's joined the Dazhenyu Great Wall in the West. Since the mountain here is higher and steeper, this section becomes more winding and varied. "Jiankou", is translated as "Arrow Knot" in English as the shape of the mountain is like an arrow, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow knot. This is a private group with a professional trekking guide, and you will have so much fun from this Great Wall hiking tour.

This is one of many hikes we’ve done with James and we cant speak highly enough of his patience, experience and knowledge about this part of the wall and many others in and around Jiankou. A terrific day out, with breathtaking and wonderful sights and sounds. James always keeps us all entertained and is also focused on safety and timeliness.

Absolutely worth it! A beautiful and wonderful hike with some challenges but just enough to feel that we are climbing a mountain ! Absolutely gorgeous views, the pictures do not do justice to the actual beauty of the area. I strongly recommend. Peter, my guide was attentive and knowledgeable. I would do this again with my family.

From the 8 AM pick up at my hotel until I was returned at 7 PM, my trip with James Ren was pure pleasure, aside from being very informative. What a way to see the Great Wall. I highly recommend James.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and Peter was a wonderful and very caring guide. Organisation, advance communication, driver and car were perfect and the sites visited were spectacular. Concerning the restaurant visit afterwards, we would suggest to offer more luxurious options depending on individual taste, maybe at extra cost.

Wow James, Our private trekking tour from the “wild” portion of the Great Wall in Jiankou to the restored beautiful Mutianyu Great Wall will forever be in our memory. My wife and I have hiked many places in the world but this was one of the more challenging nearly 8 miles with the equivalent 119 floors elevation change according to our I-Phone. The views were incredibly spectacular of the snaking Great Wall as it winds from mountain top tower to tower teetering on the precipices of the wild mountain ridges. James’s stories and history of the many sections of the Wall made this spectacular hike one to cherish. My wife and I are in our late 50’s and we felt very safe as James kept to our pace giving us time to rest and take photos of amazing views. You definitely need to be prepared with comfortable hiking boots, a day pack with water and snacks, hat, and layered clothing with long sleeve shirt and light jacket in October for the cooler forested Jiankou climb. Once we peaked at one the towers, the lack of shade on the scrub brush dryer side leading to Mutianyu meant a warmer walk where we shed our jackets. The downward side of the hike was welcomed but it is steep including many stairs and uneven walking surfaces on the restored wall. We chose to walk the entire way to the Mutianyu village and not take the cable car. Our tired legs were a little shakey when we reached the shuttle to take us to our private car. Our Chinese dinner and local beer really completed our incredible day. Thank you James for the best day on the Great Wall.

Fantastic day out with Peter. Great weather, superb views on a quiet unspoilt part of the Great Wall. Private driver and guide highly recommended. Our guide Peter spoke good English and was able to provide much information on the history of the Wall. He looked after us brilliantly all day and was keen to take photos of us at every opportunity.

I can't recommend this tour enough! Peter was our guide and he was excellent! He was extremely knowledgable, friendly, and fun to hang out with. We started with a hike to the old Jiankou Great Wall and made our way to the more well known Mutianyu Great wall. Jiankou was my favorite part - not a lot of people and that part of the wall is not maintained, so it had a lot of character. About half way through the hike we took a break in the shade and Peter gave us much needed snacks. After the hike he took us to a really great restaurant on the way back to Beijing. I'm vegan and I was especially happy with how accommodating Peter was when he ordered our food. Our driver was also really nice. He and Peter made sure we had enough water at all times in the car and to/from the hike. We were given several bottles to take with us during the hike as well as hiking poles. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to take the 'road less traveled,' but not to anyone who doesn't want to work for it - the hike was not easy. ;-)

This was easily the highlight of my trip to China, which included all the main touristy sights in Beijing and Shanghai. The whole trip was fun, but this hike was exceptional. My friend and I had Peter as a guide. He was great! He was really knowledgeable, helpful, and patient with all of our picture taking, provided snacks in the middle of the hike, and ordered us a delicious lunch at the end. The scenery was incredible and hiking on the old part of the wall was an amazing experience. I enjoyed the entire trip - including the drive through the mountains to access the hiking trail, the hike up the mountain to reach the wall, and popping up at a watch tower to awe inspiring mountain and old wall views, not to mention the entire rest of the trek along the wall. Highly recommend this trek!
