Tour Details

The Underground Level of the Colosseum has not been used for 1700 years. Now it is open and you can visit the very place where gladiators prepared for their thrilling games, and where lions, wolves, ostriches and other wild animals were kept before they were lifted up from the bowels of the Colosseum and disgorged into the arena. We’ll explore the Colosseum, highlighting the Underground Level, the Arena Level and the Third Tier–areas. From the Third Tier, you’ll have a panoramic view of Ancient Rome before we walk down through the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, the very center of the ancient city with its magnificent buildings. This is a 4-hour small-group tour with a maximum of 12 people for all its duration.

Begin your tour at the Colosseum. Follow your guide into the ancient structure's Undergrounds, where gladiators could once hear the cheering of the crowd. See the newly constructed timber elevator for a glimpse at how the Romans hoisted animals up to the arena level. There were 28 of these elevators in the Colosseum, each powered by eight people. During this part of the tour your will walk on the fight arena where gladiators once fought.

Afterward, follow your guide to the Roman Forum, the center of life in Ancient Rome where people conducted business, sought justice, and discussed politics and philosophy. Off the Via Sacra the street diving the Forum visit the altar where Caesar was cremated.

Continue to the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, where virgins tended the eternal flame, ensuring the fortune and glory of Rome, and to the Senate building. See two magnificent arches: the white marble Arch of Septimius Severus and the Arch of Constantine. Constantines arch marks the emperors victory over the pagans and the moment when Christianity became the religion of the Empire.

Then head to Palatine Hill, where the She-Wolf Lupa nursed the twin founders of Rome: Romulus and Remus. It is the oldest part of Rome and the area later favored by Romes richest and most powerful families.

  • A definite highlight our our trip. Our guide was amazing with facts about ancient Rome. His delivery on the history was easy to understand and enjoyable for listening and learning. Our group was small which made it that much more fun. This was by far the best thing we booked for our stay in Rome. We highly recommend to everyone.

  • Fantastic tour. Terrific guide, great to see the Colosseum, and Palatine Hill was amazing. Everyone should do a longer tour of this area.

  • I mean come on it is a underground tour of the colosseum, with the roman forum what more do you need?

  • Very knowledgeable, engaging and entertaining

  • This tour was phenomenal! We had Beatrice as our guide, and she was beyond exceptional. You could see her passion shining through at each stop. My friends and I raved about her for the rest of our trip in Rome! “I wish Beatrice was here!” was said multiple times as we explored Rome after this tour!

  • We truly enjoyed our small group tour of the Colosseum. We found the tour guides to be highly knowledgeable and full of information. We were able to climb all the way to the top and we were taken to the underground. Wonderful tour!

  • This was a fantastic tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, personable and presented the information in a manner that made us eager for the next tidbit of history. I would highly recommend this tour.

  • Great tour especially of the area around the Colosseum. Guide was very knowledgeable and personable.

  • We have toured the colosseum before, this glimpse into the belly of the beast was fascinating. The archeologist was amazing, The 4 of us were in our 70's and 80's and had no problem navigating with the care and consideration of our guides. The steps up to the recently opened top tier seats were steep so we did opt out, but felt we still felt the tour was well worth our limited time in Rome.

  • Can not explain the excitement and amazement of this tour and the structures you get to see up close. The stories about the history and construction of the palaces and colosseum are mesmerizing. The grandeur of Rome at its high point must have been a sight to behold. Well worth the walk. Comfortable and supportive shoes are a must.
