Know More about this tour

Departing from central Lisbon, head to one of the most mystical places in Portugal, Almourol Castle, which was built by the Knights Templar to defend the boundary line below the Tagus River. Take a boat ride on the river to the castle, where youll have half an hour to explore and soak up the medieval atmosphere.

Next, enjoy the drive in a comfortable minivan to the beautiful village of Constncia, known for being one of the places frequented by famous Portuguese poet Lus Vaz de Cames, who wrote the epic poem Os Lusadas. With your expert guide, take a walk in Parque Constncia, one of the most magnificent parks in this region of Portugal, and enjoy the contact with nature, just like the Templar Knights did. Here you will also taste a typical delicacy made from almonds and eggs (included).

Your next stop is the beautiful city of Tomar, one of Portugals historical gems. The city was built according to the rules of the Knights Templar, with four religious monuments constructed around the city to form a perfect crucifix. The most impressive of these monuments is the ensemble of the Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Templars in the 12th century. Visit the castle and convent with your guide. You'll spend a good part of your day in Tomar, where you can enjoy lunch at a local eatery (own expense) and walk to popular Tomar attractions like the Gothic-style Church of Santa Maria do Olival, built in the 12th century as the pantheon for the Knights Templar.

After exploring Tomar, return to Lisbon by comfortable minivan.

The Templar castle we boated to was pretty amazing , especially climbing up the tower to see the whole river surrounding the castle

The most memorable thing was to be able to take a small boat out to an island and visit a Templar Castle built by the original Templars in 1156.

Probably the best small group tour I’ve ever done, small group no crowds with a fantastic guide, Ricky was his name, amazing young man who really knew his stuff, also guided us to fantastic lunch, the best meal I’ve had in Portugal, great work.

A great day out for those who are interested in some history. Daniel, our guide, was very knowledgeable matching many statements that I had already read up. The countryside is beautiful. The architecture absolutely stunning. We delayed our lunch by about 45 minutes in order to finish the sightseeing and if you are given that option I would recommend it. I would not have enjoyed the final location if I had just eaten.

I knew a little bit about the Knights Templar before my trip but learned so much more after this tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the history fun and come alive. We visited the Almoral Castle first and we were lucky to have the place to ourselves. It was not crowded and we were able to explore and climb the castle at our own pace. We then went to the Convent of Christ and I really enjoyed learning the history of the church. Our group ended up having lunch together at a great restaurant our guide recommended. I really enjoy having a small group size and not feeling like I was in a herd haha. It was a well paced day that was full of interesting sights, stories and I definitely would not have been able to do this excursion on my own.

We had a wonderful trip to Tours with our guide Meca. She was a very knowledgeable tour guide about the Knights Templar but even better was her professional attention to all her guests and a great personality. Booking a tour with Cool Tours and Meca and you will not be disappointed.

Great day trip. Learned additional facts about the Knights Templar that I did not know. Castelo de Amourol takes one back to an earlier time. Explanations as to why and how were eye opening. Then Tomar is not to be missed and topped off with a fantastic little piece of heaven desert - yum

Informative tour if you have some interest in the Knights Templar history. The stops at Almourel Castle and Convent of Christ were captivating. Our guide was very knowledgeable. There was a stop or two that seemed more like filler time and less related to the theme.

Had a great day trip with The Cool Tours doing the Knights Templar tour. Our guide Ricky was excellent! Prompt, polite, and had plenty of interesting insight to provide during our trip. Ricky's knowledge and background with a Master's degree in History was well utilized while touring the various locations on the trip as well as answering questions about Portugal and its other history while driving back to Lisbon. The castles, convents, and towns visited were very well spaced and given plenty of time to enjoy and see. Though we booked a small group tour, it ended up being just my wife and I, with another gentlemen, as multiple people canceled, so overall it felt like a private tour. Would highly recommend this day trip and Ricky as you're guide! Only disappointing aspect was that half the convent of Christ exterior was covered for renovations and cleaning. Though this is not the fault of the tour company, I do think it should be at least noted, especially since the restorative process will be lasting well over a year.
