Know More about this tour

Start your adventure with a pickup from your central Reykjavik hotel and travel southwest to the scenic Blue Mountains (Blfjll).
As you travel, listen to a fascinating introduction to the Thrihnukagigur volcano the site of your underground experience. Hear how this dormant peak last erupted 4,000 years ago, and why the nature of the explosion left the volcano with an open and accessible magmatic chamber.

After roughly 30 minutes, arrive at Thrihnukagigur and after a short briefing, start out on an hour walk to its crater. The trek, while not uphill, is undulating and uneven, and only suitable for walkers with a moderate or higher level of fitness. Hiking shoes are advised.
Follow your guide at a steady pace along the 2-mile (3-km) path and, as you walk, take in the surrounding lava fields dotted with volcanic cones and gas fissures.

When you arrive at the crater, get another safety briefing and don the provided helmet and harness. Then, in a group of three or four other people, board the open cable elevator that lowers you down into the crater.

Thrill as you descend around 400 feet (120 meters) into the throat of the volcano, passing millennia-old rock walls deep into the bowels of the Earth. At the bottom, step off the lift and explore the magma chamber with your guide. Marvel at the remarkable natural arena and take in the rock dome with its patchwork of colors created by scalding and charring.

As you look around in awe, hear incredible facts about the volcanos last eruption and imagine the chamber as it once was, filled with a seething mass of burning hot lava.

After around 30 minutes inside the volcano, ascend to the surface and then walk back to your vehicle. Relax on the ride back to Reykjavik and finish with a hotel drop-off.

Our tour got off to bad start when we were late to meet the group but after calling their office, they arranged for one of their guides to wait on the footpath. Despite being snowy, the footpath was visible so we were able to navigate along it without difficulty. The hike to the base camp was ~40 minutes across a stunning flat landscape. After a stop at the base, were were fitting with a waist harness and hats before a short climb to the lift, 6 min decent and 40 minute wander around the magma chamber. The guides were highly knowledgeable about the volcano and volcanism in Iceland, and friendly. Their boss also makes delicious soup.

It was a bit of a challenge with very strong winds against us going to the Volcano, but the Guides were all great, and it was a fantastic experience! Definitely worth going to.

We were terribly mislead regarding our pick up location, and missed the tour, losing a very large amount of money! Completely dissatisfied with how Viator, Gray Line and the tour company handled this fiasco!

Fantastic experience one needs to experience the event to appreciate the beauty of nature. Worth the walk, the descent into the crater and the yummy soup

We had a unique experience when going inside the volcano. There was an electrical malfunction so our group inside the volcano experience total darkness with the exception of the small lights on our helmets. We were told this has never happened before. Despite this malfunction, the staff was very professional, experienced and knowledgeable and handle the situation as best they could. Had the lights in the volcano worked, I would give this experience 5 stars. It truly is a unique experience.

This was an amazing trip. There was some technical difficulties with the lights but all the staff was amazing and made the experience perfect despite the issue. They did not skip a beat and made it an even better experience. Thanks

Great unique experience. Was picked up as expected without any issues. Drove to the meeting area, got a safety briefing and started the hike to base camp. The hike was not difficult, I was expecting it to be harder based on how the website made it seem. Once there we got to see an artic fox and waited for our turn in the volcano ( we split into 3 groups). Once it was our turn, we hiked up a hill and took the thing into the volcano. It felt safe in the lowering thing and once down there we got to explore around (it's a big circle). The time given down there was plenty. We got back up and ate some delicious soup. Price is steep but it is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Loved our guide Unnur!
