It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings. commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus, it was completed by the emperor Hadrian and probably dedicated about 126 AD. Subsequently, it has been used as a church and dedicated to "St. Mary and the Martyrs". Its peculiarity is the coffered concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.

Dating back to the 1st century AD, the square was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium. The ancient Romans went there to watch the agones ("games"), and hence it was known as "Circus Agonalis" ("competition arena").

It isthe fountain in the middle of Piazza Navona square. It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X, and represents four major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile representing Africa, the Danube representing Europe, the Ganges representing Asia, and the Ro de la Plata representing the Americas.
