Know More about this tour

Depart Port Zante, Basseterre or your hotel lobby with your experienced tour guide for an approximately 1-hour drive to the Parish of St Paul. You will journey about 16 miles from the city of Basseterre onto the west coastline heading to the furthest point in the north. The city of Basseterre bustles with activity as boats dock and depart with passengers travelling to and from the sister island of Nevis, friendly citizens smile and the sound of string band music or calypso permeates the breezy atmosphere.

The islands colorful architecture is characteristically Caribbean. The central roundabout is the Berkeley Memorial, which is originally built in the style of Piccadilly Circus in London. The green and yellow structure has clock on four sides with a built in fountain and stands in the middle of restaurants, commercial banks and the National Museum. You will view the St George Anglican Church built by the Jesuits in 1670 and The War Memorial, a Cenotaph built to honor those who fought in the world wars. Be sure to capture the Islands lush vegetation, verdant mountains and turquoise Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

The tour will pass through the village of Middle Island, the oldest Anglican Church and Brimstone Hill Fortress. At the village of St Paul the tour will drive through Belmont Estate to the parking area which is about 1200 feet above sea level. A thorough overview of the flora and fauna would be shared with the guests. The rainforest provides a canopy against the rain. It is fairly easy to start with no more than your average trek but the last quarter takes half time as you go up and over and hopscotch over roots and rocks.

Guests need to be reasonably fit as the last quarter requires moderate effort as you can go out on a ledge or two to captivate the best picturesque views. The volcano stands at 3792 feet and is the highest point on the island. On the top of central forest reserve the Volcano rim is 2800 feet above sea. At the high mountain which takes about 2 to 2 and a half hours hiking upwards, lies cloaked in a dwarfed cloud forest and overlooks what is often referred to as Giants Salad Bowl.

Sugar City, St Kitts volcano crater is 1,000 feet deep and almost one mile wide. On top the volcano crater rim you will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch while rejuvenating amidst the dwarfed cloud forest from where there are spectacular views over our quilted coastline below, with nearby offshore islands on one side and the other is the giant volcano crater 1000 feet to its floor.

On returning to the transportation at the foot of the mountain you will celebrate the end of the challenging hike with cool refreshments compliment of the tour.

To start with I have to say that Captain Sunshine Tours delivered on their promises and Damien was the best guide you could ever want, helpful, knowledgeable, skilled and entertaining. The hike is not a hike - it is a mountain and rock climb, a real killer for anyone not in top physical condition. My husband and I are in our mid sixties and walk a lot at home so we managed to finish it but were sore for days after. What were we thinking?!! In addition, there is a real possibility of injury and no aid in sight. The view is of a jungle filled crater through a small gap in the trees so unless you want to physically challenge yourself and are confident of your abilities - don't consider this. The view is not worth the effort. Any satisfaction comes from arriving safe and sound back at the starting point.

There were 9 in the group of varying abilities from athletic twentysomethings to me portly and in my mid fifities. It was soon clear that I would be delaying the group so I let them go on ahead and I only got half way up the volcano when it was time to come down. Had I had enough time I would have been able to reach the summit and so I was disappointed that the group was quite large with varying abilities. I would suggest you only go for this if you are in your 20s and fit.

This is a serious hike, due to the elevation. I avg 5-6 miles a week at home & this still had my heart pumping. Passed 3 people on the way up. Not for beginners, you must be in decent shape for this & bring lotsa water. That being said, it's very doable, I hiked w/a mother & daughter & Canadian couple who all made it. Mr.Damion our guide was patient & very competent helping us ascend & descend the volcano & answer any questions we had. However he "forgot" our snacks, so be sure to check w/your guide about that, b4 you start this hike.

This was one of the most difficult hiking tours I’ve ever had to do. The description should have called it a black diamond hike. And it says we get a picnic lunch, well we only got a ½ a glass of juice and a small muffin! This hike is not for the un experienced hiker!!!

The ride around the island was very exciting and beautiful. Seeing the school children gathering for the day and adults working around the island was interesting. The roads are very uneven so expect a bumpy but exhilarating ride! We saw chickens, cows, goats, a few dogs and a cat. We loved seeing chickens and goats everywhere! The volcano hike- wow! If you like to hike or just take in the beauty of nature this is great. It was a very strenuous hike. I mean climbing tree roots and loose rocks. You must take a hands free water (we used camelbacks) or a light small backpack. Bring a snack like granola bar or fruit. Do expect to get dirty. Don't expect to have it easy. There are spiders and mud but they are harmless spiders. We saw a monkey too!! Listening to the birds was awesome. Our guide told us what all the birds sounds were. The views at the top are amazing and makes it all worth it. Your guide will stop anytime you need. You may spend about 20minutes just sitting at the top and taking it all in and resting. Don't do this hike if you have any medical condition that will not be forgiving. My knee never likes a downhill hike so, Damien, our guide found me a perfect stick and we went slow all the way down and my knees were ok! He talked to us about the trees and the culture. It was very quaint and relaxing even though we were sweating and working so hard. We called our guide Damien, the mountain goat, because his shoes were flat and he hopped and jumped around that mountain like a pro! Damien also told us all about the island history and pointed out the landmarks along the ride back. Super awesome!! My husband and I love loved this trip!! And the Volcano Bar at the bottom of the hike was a nice surprise awaiting us. They had local made drinks and beers for $2! Also, the raisin bread we were given was soo good! Our guide encouraged us to come back to the island and he would take us around the entire thing and show us everything we didn't see next time! We are definitely putting that on our list!

when we looked into this tour the person we booked it with called the Capt. Sunshine tour to make sure we had enough time it was a 6 hour tour. We were on Land for 9 hours. Our cruise ship run into bad weather and we were one hour late. Got there at the meeting place at 9:30 am. I had called previously from the ship early in the morning to the company and told them that we would be a bit late. They said just come to the Casino, we will be there. When we got there we were told the group left at 8:15 and they did not have another guide to take us up the mountain. My children and I were very upset because now there was no way to plan another tour. We had the choice to go with the Cruise line tour but choose this one instead. Big mistake. Big 200.00 mistake. They did not care. They could have driven us to catch up with the group, but not enough people to help them with the customers. I don't understand why they agreed to this knowing the boat would not dock until 9am anyways so why leave even earlier. They had no intention to wait for us. One of The guys told us they like it when they have no cruise passengers, because it crunches their time since the ships leave at 6 pm.
