Overview

The Stedelijk Museum is a must see when visiting Amsterdam! The original building has recently been completely renovated and extended with a spectacular new wing. With important movements such as Bauhaus, the Amsterdam School, De Stijl, CoBrA, abstract expressionism, pop art and conceptual art.
The most meaningful movements in both art and design are represented with (inter)national artists and designers who are helping to shape the changes of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Come and see iconic works by, amongst others, Vincent van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Marlene Dumas, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Nicolaas Warb, Gerrit Rietveld, El Anatsui, Rineke Dijkstra, Danielle Dean, Sarah Zapata, Simnikiwe Buhlungu and Charley Toorop.

The collection, organized thematically and in a loose chronology, emphasizes that art and design develop alongside social movements and bear multiple histories that encompass diverse perspectives.

Don’t miss Stedelijk … I miss it already…. What a collection of contemporary, art, classic paintings (even a couple of van Goghs) and brand new art (paint still wet) - paintings, sculptures, installations and much more. No need for advance ticket reservation - spend easily 3-4 hours. Go now - before queues start building in front of the building.

The collection was amazing they gave a lot of contemporary art work and the gift shop had many cool items. Also the audio guides were free which was nice.

We found this museum while sat in a restaurant looking for things to do, when it was recommended instead of the nearby Moco museum, and we were not disappointed! We were lucky to find that it was free entry for those under 19, with free audio guides too (definitely get these, we found out so much other information to go against some of the pieces). We went to the pre 1950s exhibit and spent best part of an hour in there, we found all the art curated really interesting, it’s not just paintings on a wall there’s statues and live art to interact with also! So much information as well about how the war impacted the art at the time and how migration of jews to the area impacted as well. So much information to read we could’ve spent hours looking at every piece! We went to the 1950-1980 exhibit after and this was so interesting, with so many moving picture pieces as well as paintings (you have to find the dancing hologram and walk around it!) and again areas regarding the Vietnam conflict were also interesting and the short films shown were great. Our trip had to be cut short because we came at 4 and the museum closed at 6. Our biggest mistake was finding this gem too late! We will definitely be back to look through all of the exhibitions and more areas.

We went to see the current exhibition MODERN - Van Gogh, Rietveld, Léger and others (on until the 24th September) and were disappointed. To begin with, the young lady at the entrance was downright rude when asking for information (this was on the 23rd of June 2023 in the afternoon). Then we entered and were somewhat confused by the exhibition itself. I understand that the main theme was “MODERN” , but we could not find any logic either in the works selected or in the order they were displayed. The museum itself is a rather strange building with the escalator leading either above or below the floor we wanted to visit.

An excellent museum, all of the current exhibitions are worth visiting, and some can be quite emotional to view. Staff are very helpful and friendly. The gift shop is vast.

This is such an excellent museum to visit. For one, the layout and interior are lovely and inviting throughout. The display of different types of art keeps you engaged and intrigued as you move through the rooms. A mixture of modern and vintage art is displayer and thus it becomes such an intellectual adventure to explore. A high recommend on my behalf.
