It will be a short 20 to 30 minute cruise out into the open ocean off of the Kona coast before you get to the manta site. During your journey, you will be able to view the beautiful Hawaiian sunset. Once you arrive at the site, your guide and Captain will prepare you to go into the water to snorkel with the manta rays.

Once you have completely immersed yourself in the experience of having swam with manta rays, it will be an easy climb back onto the boat for a ride back to the harbor. • Definitely a must do! We were very lucky to actually be able to see the Mantas! If you're worrying about swimming with them at night, don't be - it's such an amazing experience!

  • It's hard to give this activity a good or bad review. We went with the Hang Loose Kona company.
Positive: The boat ride to the site during sunset was nice. Snacks, water, and juice were offered. The crew was okay although other companies we went with for other tours were much more personable. The mantas were amazing when they came by.

Negative: The bathroom on the boat was disgusting. The rest of the items that made this trip negative were not in the control of the tour company: The waves were larger than normal making it difficult to swim and reducing visibility. This is a night activity so we got cold and could not stay out as long as some other people although the company did give everyone a half body wet suit. All tour groups go to the same manta ray feeding area, so the manta rays go from tour group to tour group to feed. There were only 2 to 3 mantas and they came to feed around us about every 5 to 10 minutes. Your role is to hang on to a semi-stationary floating board the tour guide will move it around if necessary, lay flat, float, and try not to kick. We were good swimmers but rough seas and not kicking made it difficult to keep the bottom half of our bodies from sinking. It seemed many others were having this difficulty also.

  • A MUST DO WHEN IN HAWAII!!! Would not use any other tour company except this one...loved the experience!

  • It was great fun, the crew was motivating, the manta rays even more though

  • This is indeed one of the greatest experiences you could have in your life. Seeing giant mantas up close, literally flying toward you from dark depths at great speed with their huge mouths open... That's intense, but perfectly safe. Mantas are harmless and friendly, and exceptional swimmers - doing multiple somersaults, passing within inches from you without touching. Sometimes they do touch you, probably deliberately, to show affection, and it's an incredible feeling. A ride in a high-speed boat to and from the snorkeling area was a nice bonus. Unfortunately, the crew did all they could to sour the experience. The captain used his limited acting abilities to try being funny, but was mostly obnoxious. The first mate acted like it was his first time on a boat, he kept stumbling and doing the wrong things. If that was an attempt at comedy, then it was pathetic. If it wasn't, if he really didn't know what he was doing, then that's really scary. Anyway, they promised interesting narration throughout the trip as well as the best sunset views, but basically the only narration was a mandatory safety instruction, which coincided with the sunset, making us miss it completely. Sorry, fellas, no tips for you.

  • Wow. Once in a lifetime experience. I had my 9 year old son and my 68 year old mother along and everyone was made comfortable to have the best experience possible. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful and the mantas were majestic. The boat ride to the snorkel site was even fantastic. Right before we got in the water the sun was setting over the ocean, just beautiful. I would recommend to anyone and would go again myself any time

  • Amazing experience!

  • Was not easy to resist the current, but amazing experience. If only someone would have helped me adjust my mask so that it would not leak and so I wouldn't have had salty water in my eyes, it would have been perfect. The only recommendation I would have is give everyone a little noodle to put under your feet and you wouldn't have so many people with their feet down chasing away the manta rays. Hold on tight and enjoy the show! I recommend though, it's a must-do!

  • Excellent experience, far exceeded my expectations!

  • Amazing experience. Simon and Jacob were excellent and as soon as we hit the water we started seeing the manta rays. Best trip of the vacation, highly recommend.
