Your journey on “the Little red Train” starts amid the palms of Tirano, northern Italy, taking you with ease over the spiraling Brusio viaduct and through the Bernina Pass (2253 metres above the sea level) into the Engadin Valley before arriving at St. Moritz. Along the way you'll pass wild gorges and icy glaciers, cross soaring bridges and shoot through loop tunnels.
This north-south Alpine crossing offers breathtaking views and stunning scenery as you travel over boldly curved viaducts and through winding tunnels. After 2.5 hours on board, watch the scenery change from windswept gorges and snow-clad glaciers to the chic chalets of St Moritz.

Hop off the train to enjoy roughly 1.5 hours of free time in the exclusive resort of St. Moritz, stopping at Swizerland’s best chocolate house (food and drink at your own expensese) and enjoy free time to explore the ‘Top of the World’ before returning to Milan by air-conditioned coach. • Very nice tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and considerate. We enjoyed the trip more because of her detailed descriptions and helpful nature

  • Excellent tour. The scenery is spectacular. The only down side is we didnt have enough time in St Moritz and too long was spent in Tirano. By the time we walked up to the town in St Moritz from the train station it was time to walk back to our bus for the return journey.

  • Great to see a part of the Swiss Alps for those with limited time. This is a very ,very long day tour and the majority of this is spent on the coach which was comfortable but tiring. The tour was unexpectedly longer due to landslides on some roads, so the drive back after St Moritz was close to 5 hours. The bus stops at a couple of road stops and restaurants and you feel a bit like a sheep having to 'eat quickly please' and get back on the bus or they will leave you behind. The tour left Milan at 7:30 am after our initial collection from hotel at 6 am... so lots of fussing around getting the group together. The bus left without 10 people because they were not there in time. We returned to Milan after 9 pm. Scenery on the train is lovely.

  • Amazing
    This tour is a must
The first time I have ever seen a glacier

  • This trip was way beyond what was expected. The views are amazing. Very long day, but well worth it. For lunch I highly recommend that you go with the guides to the local restaurant. The local god is very good and not something you would normally find. It is an extra 16 euros each but very good.

  • It's a wonderful experience. When you ride in this train Bernina Express Rail seat on the left side because most of the nice views are on the left although the tour guide always says where to look if it's on the right or left. Overall, we loved it!

  • great views!

  • This was an amazing train ride through the Swiss Alps. Hotel pick-up was nice to have but Van Driver was a little reckless through early morning traffic. Wife and I were getting really bounced around on the stone roadways through town. We did not enjoy that part of the trip! Drop off back to Hotel would also be a great option since you get back to city so late.
The visit to St. Moritz was also way too short. It was less than an hour and most of the stores were closed, not sure why. Maybe because it was a Monday? We had a Spanish speaking lead guide and an English speaking guide. They separated both groups on the train but our English speaking guide did not communicate well with the lead guide so things got a little chaotic when it came to meeting instructions and times. Our guide actually lost sight of the lead guide at one point, which left our group kind of lost. They need better communication between guides!

  • Do not book this tour through Viator as they use a local company called Zani Viaggi.
Zani Viaggi employ the world's most obnoxious and unhelpful women to answer their phone.

We booked the Bernina Express with hotel pick up from Milan. We were using Air bnb so we couldn't choose a hotel to be picked up from. As per their website, we selected a hotel close to where we were staying then made our way there on the Morning of our tour.
We were told pick up would be around 6 to 6.30 am, so we arrived at the named hotel at 5.45 am. We waited till 6.45am then phoned Zani Viaggi as there was no sign of our pick up. I had the misfortune of dealing with the most rude and obnoxious women on the other end of the phone, who couldn't wait to tell me It is not my problem Sir, you have missed your pick up I tried to explain that we had been waiting by the front door of the hotel and hadn't seen anyone. She then explained I do not know how you do it in your country but this is not how we work here
We then ran and got a taxi to the departure point, only just making the bus in time.

I would highly recommend the Bernina express but would suggest doing the trip yourself to save a lot of time and money.

The Zani Viaggi tour goes as follows -

6 to 6.30 am hotel pick up If you're lucky
7.00 am leave departure point on coach for a 5 hour trip with short stop in the middle.
12.00 pm arrive at Tirano then go for a very basic meal in a crammped restaurant. This is 16 Euros extra each.
1.00 pm catch Bernina express from Tirano to St Moritz
3.00 pm arrive at St Moritz.
4.00 pm catch coach and travel for 5.5 hours back to Milan, with quick stop half way
9.30 pm arrive back at Milan. You then need to find your own way back as return drop off to hotels isn't provided.

The Bernina express is brilliant and the views going into the Swiss Alps are amazing but it's only 2 hours of a 15 hour day. Over 10 hours of that are spent on the coach.

St Moritz is also a lovely place and well worth visiting. It's just a shame the time spent there is so little. We got speaking to a few people in St Moritz who has also taken the Bernina Express from Tirano. They had done the trip on their own from Milan by train and couldn't believe how much we had paid and how long it took us to get there. As well as the fact our Bernina trip was one way and they had a return. They also explained how cheap and easy it was to book thier train tickets. All instructions are avilable in English and the Tirano train station is right next to where you catch the Bernina Express.

So a quick sum up of my long rammble.
Visit St Moritz by the Berninna express but do the tour on your own.
Don't book with Zani Viaggi, these are the people Viator use.
If you do go with Zani Viaggi, don't expect any help from the very rude Woman that answers thier phone.

  • A breathtaking experience! The tour guides could have been more informative and more interested in their jobs.
