The complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.

In 1565, Emperor Akbar constructed themassive red sandstone Agra Fort on the bank of the Yamuna river.Additions were made until the rule of his grandson, Shah Jahan. In Akbar's time the fort was principally a military structure, but during Shah Jaha Regin, it partially became a Palace. It is an imposing structure with walls of red sandstone almost three kilometers long.

Enter through the Amar Singh Gate. The eastern part of the fort contains a palace, audience hall and mosques built by three emperors. The fort presents a good sampling of their favored architectural styles.

The guide and driver were beyond excellent... Beyond. Deepak was our guide and Ashok was our driver. Both lovely gentlemen. It was 44 degrees that day and I got sick after all that long day of heat but the tour itself was so so interesting. Red Fort and Taj Mahal were certainly more interesting than I thought ... 100 palaces inside Red Fort! I would recommend this trip but I would suggest to take a couple of flasks to keep water cold as it's incredibly hot if you go in April as we did.

Overall it was an interesting adventure.
What could have been better is to have more historical info shared and less of taking us to the 'shops' to buy stuff.

Driver was excellent. Safe and always looking out for us.
