Next, journey to Batalha and discover its rich cultural heritage, from the Roman presence to decisive struggles for national independence. Visit the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitria da Batalha, better known as the Monastery of Batalha, built by King D. Joo I. It was built to fulfill a promise to the Virgin Mary following Portugals August 14, 1385 victory over the Spanish army in the Battle of Aljubarrota, and came to symbolize the countrys independence. Aided by the Knights Templar during the reconquest, Dom Afonso Henriques, Portugals founder, donated the Tomars lands to the Knights Templar in 1160. The castle was built by D. Excelente passeio, qualquer um dos pontos turísticos vale a pena visitar.

Pedro was a wonderful tour guide. The places we visited were strikingly beautiful and are not to be missed. Would have preferred to have learned more about the life and impact of the templars.

Our tour guide, Pedro, was a lovely person and quite flexible. However, he seemed a bit disorganized and unaware of the sites we were touring. We started our tour at Tomar. It turned out there was a festival that day that occurs once every four years. At first, that seemed like a lucky coincidence. However, once we could not get off of the highway due to intense traffic, we quickly realized that this was not an ideal situation. We ended up losing almost 2 hours of our tour because of the crowds, which could not be added on to the end because Pedro had another tour at 5:30 that evening. As I said, Pedro tried his best to make it work, but even when we arrived at the various sites that we were touring, he did not provide much information and often did not know the answers to our questions. Overall, we did not get much out of the experience.

Great tour.Three old monasteries. A lot of history and architecture. Pedro is very knowledgeable and friendly guide. Highly recommend. Our teenage children liked it very much as well.
