Know More about this tour

Meet your guide at Arrowmont Stables and Cabins in Cullowhee North Carolina, which is about a 2-hour drive from Asheville. At this 200-acre (80-hectare) working horse farm youll get acquainted with equine behavior and riding tips during a 50-minute safety program via training video or live demonstration.

Once youre matched with a suitable horse, snap on your helmet then practice horseback riding in the ring before setting off on the Fern Forest Trail, a gentle path that is suitable for all skill levels. You'llpass by the cabins of an old youth camp and meander through a variety of terrain including a dense fern forest that reaches 3800 feet in elevation.

Listen to birds sing and keep a lookout for a variety of wildlife, including local wild turkeys and deer, before ending your tour back at the stables.

Some RIDING TIPS:

  1. Horses don't know they are big. That's why we can control them with the bit in their mouth.
  2. Horses think like little children. They want you to protect them.
  3. Horses can be very stubborn.Whoever is MOST stubborn wins. You need to be more stubborn than the horse.

Be warned! My family booked a horseback riding tour that we were very much looking forward to. Unfortunately my niece contracted COVID. I immediately called to cancel and explained the circumstances. The manager/owner not once asked if our niece was ok. She never offered for us the chance to rebook at a later date. She only said “our Health was not her responsibility” that the “pandemic wasn’t real”, that Lysol has been fighting COVID since the 70’s and it even says it on the can”. When I tried to explain to her that we did the responsible thing by not showing up and potentially exposing her business to Covid and potentially closing them down for two weeks she could only reply with a laugh. I have contacted Viator to let them know how one of their vendors is treating people who have been affected by the pandemic and how it reflects Trip Advisor and Viator as well. The sad thing is she could have kept her entire profit by simply showing some compassion and empathy and offering us to simply reschedule the date. Instead she had to spew her ignorant beliefs that the pandemic isn’t real. Be careful booking here. I can only imagine what their sanitizing policies are if the don’t believe in something that has killed so many.

Nice ride, horses were great. Very remote. Beautiful drive to get there too but warning it is about 1 1/2 hours from Asheville.

We have scheduled our ride for the day with a thunderstorm. All of us had no riding experience and were quite worried. Nancy was very understanding and helped us to cancel with Expedia the night before.

We ride once or twice a year. My wife has had lessons. Beautiful trail. Funny, yet informative safety video. Our group had us, a Mom and daughter (about 7), and a single middle-aged female. My wife was the most experienced rider and the child had her first ride. Beautiful, healthy looking horses. We had a herd of cattle growing up, and these large animals looked healthy. Guide was friendly, but did not chatter constantly so you could enjoy the scenery. Several hundred feet of elevation change through woodlands with multiple small springs. Our horses were well trained and quite docile. But nobody did anything dumb to spook the animals. Very nice ride - among the best I've had.

Our family went to Arrowmont Stables and had an amazing experience!! The staff was accommodating, knowledgeable and entertaining!! The horses looked to be in excellent condition and well cared for! If in the area, would highly recommend this riding stable!!

My husband and I made reservations for the Fern Forest Trail, which is their basic, simplest ride-we ride maybe once a year. The reservation was very easy. They emailed directions which we were told to follow, rather than use GPS because of spotty cell service in the mountains-great idea. They also had us watch a training and safety video-that was also a great idea. Our guide gave us horses based on experience and body weight. He was a wonderful guide and we had a great time. I would recommend Arrowmont to anyone thinking about seeing the beautiful mountains and forests around here on horseback.

Joshua was an excellent guide on our tour of the Fern Forest. This was my children's first time horseback riding and he made them feel very comfortable on their horses. My little guy was still a little nervous after our loop around the corral so he gave them a lead line for the trail. This eased their minds and made the ride so enjoyable. We loved this trail for the kids first horseback ride.
