Know More about this tour

Leave your Kona or Waikoloa resort or hotel in style in our new high-ceiling Mercedes Benz luxury van.  Enjoy deli-style lunch along the historic saddle road while your  guide entertains you with stories and information of Hawaii's history and local insight.  Your first hike is a 2.5 hour round trip to the summit of Mauna Ulu, where, after your specially-trained guide takes care of the required park and cultural protocols, you will peer down into a steaming crater mouth, still hot since the last eruption that sent lava all the way to the ocean.  Weather permitting, you may be able to see the currently erupting Pu'u O'o. Hike number 2 is another 2-hour round trip along the ridge and then across the crater floor of Kilauea Iki.  The hike along the ridge takes you through Hawaiian native Ohia forest where your guide will show you the varied plants and wildlife of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  On the crater floor, you'll hike across the awesomely picturesque crater floor amid steam plumes and lava formations.  After a brief hike through a lava tube, you'll head for the summit of Kilauea itself, at 1240m high, where after a quick hike you will peer at the lava-induced red glow of Halema'uma'u crater from the highest vantage point.   A local-style dinner rounds out this tour before the drive back to your hotel.

  • This was a highlight of our week long visit to the Big Island. Our guide Mike was everything you would want in a guide, friendly, knowledgeable, keen, knows all the great local places for lunch and dinner the poke stop in Hilo was excellent and has some great photo tricks :.
The tour is a long but enjoyable day. We hiked between 8-10 miles, Mike kept us fully hydrated and was able to take us on some off the trial routes that not all tour operators would, while also timing the view points so you miss the crowds and get the best views possible.
We couldn't thank Mike enough for a truly wonderful experience.

  • Hands down the highlight of our trip to the big island of Hawaii. Our tour guide Mike really made it a wonderful and enchanting day. Once we got to the island, we checked in and got a nice call back confirming our pick up time and what to expect. The night before we got an additional follow up call from Mike to lock in the exact time of our pickup. When we saw the van pull up, I took a quick look at my watch and he was pulling in at the exact time he mentioned he would be. The van we rode around in all day was roomy and comfortable. It was loaded with bottled water, jackets, backpacks, ponchos, and even some snacks that were there for us to use. The tour itself was amazing. Mike is full of knowledge of the island, volcanoes, the stars, and loads of other information. Our group had 7 people 2 being my wife and myself and Mike did a great job of accommodating with different peoples needs and interests throughout the entire day. Before spending the day with Mike, my wife and I wondered if we should have just tackled the park on our own. There was so much we would have missed if it was not for Mike and experiences we would have never even thought to have that really made the day an unforgettable experience. If your on the big island of Hawaii, and considering a visit to Vocanos National Park just sign up for the Triple Crater Hawaii Volcano Hiking Adventure and you will not be sorry.

  • Mike has an incredible wealth of knowledge about the island which he shares in his very unassuming way. Everything from food, coffee, the local plants, the history of the people and the island, the land formations, rocks, volcanoes, and the stars and moon too! This was a full day of sightseeing the south part of the island and an awesome 3 hikes in the volcanoes. An incredible adventure!

  • Just my travel companion, myself and another couple that our leader determined were Up for the Best for both where we went and enjoyed on the treks but also for our lunch and dinner unique to Hawaii and great. Exciting -- and a bit risky in places but really a great outing -- from 10:30AM until 11:30PM, a real work-out but worth it !!

  • Mike wash our guide on a day in which it rained all day. Having said that he made the most of it and gave us a great tour. He modified the tour to try to chase the sun. His knowledge of the volcano park, the island history and myth, geology, flora and fauna was remarkable. He made the tour. Our view of the active lava was truly amazing, I will never forget it. I would book with him again.

  • This is an amazing tour. As other's have said, Mike is the best tour guide. He was very knowledgeable, considerate, and compassionate. We had a small group as a group of 6 cancelled at the last minute, so he used that extra time to show us more. He took pictures for us and did some amazing things with my iPhone. This is definitely a hiking adventure with time to enjoy a lot of the volcanic and hawaiian landscape. Highly recommend.

  • This tour was absolutely fantastic!! Our tour guide, Mike, is quite possibly the most qualified guide on the face of the earth. He is one of the few people in the Big Island who have the special permit to get close to the craters, and on some of the native, sacred mountains. He picked us up from the hotel at the EXACT time he promised. Then we drove in the very comfortable van to pick up the other tourists. He was very funny, nice, and erudite. He knew just about everything there is to know about the island. From which farmer owns a certain coffee tree, to the specifics of the volcanoes, to the ancient Hawaiian culture. In fact, i jokingly asked him about a black widow spider, and he knew EXACTLY where to find one. In addition, my father asked him for a specific type of plant that grows in the jungle. And sure enough, Mike knew exactly where to find it!! This is exactly how knowledgeable Mike is. Mike has also lived in loads of countries before settling in Hawaii, so he has picked up a nice vocabulary in various languages. He is completely fluent in Japanese, and can serve as a guide for Japanese tourists, which is quite useful as quite a few of his clients are of Japanese descent. Mike didn't just drive us around from place to place. We pulled over very often to check out certain sights and frequently for restroom breaks. He had to so much to say about everything around him. He was just so likable and knowledgeable that his information alone makes the tour worth it! That being said, be aware that it can get rainy in Hilo and on the mountains. He said that it is usually raining in Hilo, and usually quite cold on the mountains. Of course, a good tour guide would provide rain ponchos, coats, a backpack, and a flashlight. Well he did just that!! He was practically prepared for an apocalypse. He knew so much about the plants and wildlife during the hikes, so all of us felt very safe under his supervision. The hikes aren't hard at all, just a little long, so be sure to dress appropriately. Most of the hikes are on cooled volcanic rock, but my favorite hike itself was inside a jungle. The weather was just so beautiful, it was just amazing. After walking through the jungle, we appeared at a very large crater. He allowed us to enter the very large volcano crater obviously long dormant. He allowed us about an hour to do whatever we wanted inside the crater. You could go for a walk or run, relax on the rocks, climb up the mini-hills that emit steam, or just simply take pics of the spectacular sight all around you. My highlight of the trip was the last location, in which we got the closest we could to an active volcano crater 1 kilometer. Even a kilometer away, we could see very brightly the lava bubbling out. But that isn't it. If you looked right up, the night sky was absolutely littered with stars. It surely was a spectacular sight. Like I said, he is one of the very few people with permission to get this close, so you can only see this spectacular sight with Mike! However, you can only see the stars with the clouds gone. Of course Mike doesn't control the clouds, but just know that if the conditions are right, Mike will tell you everything you can possibly know about the night sky, which is a lot! I would recommend that you wear sunscreen, as you are in the sunshine for quite a while. Also, bring a coat in case it gets chilly in the higher altitudes. He pays for our lunch and dinner meals, so food isn't an issue on this tour. In conclusion, this tour is flat-out worth it! If you can, ask for tour guide Mike. He is the most knowledgeable, funniest, most down to earth, selfless, and likable person for this job. I would rate this tour 10/5 if I could.

  • We packed a ton into a single day and it was great! Our guide, Mike Nelson, was a wealth of knowledge. Whether telling stories, teaching us which berries and plants are edible, sharing his favorite go to restaurants in Hilo, hiking around Rainbow Falls, to Makaopuhi Crater and the ridge line of steam vents, through Kilauea Iki Crater, or using his astronomic telescope to give us the best view of the lava in Kilauea at night, he had a great attitude and energy. He clearly has a passion for this. We were a group of 7 adults we were able to have our own private tour with varying degrees of hiking fitness. All had a great time. I highly recommend it.
