Wow, Was Nice
Every one has to take this
The tour consists of a bug to Tulum, where they turn you over to a Federal guide for a quick tour. Then a ride back to Playa del Carmen to the Tequila museum for a quick tequila history. The bus operator has many suggestions for eating here or there I assume a paid promotion. The bus was over-crowded by 1 person, so it started uncomfortable. My adult companions commented that taking a taxi to Tulum and hiring a guide would have been a better experience. Tulum is a fantastic site but we did not learn much.
We were first to be picked up, which isn't a big deal until you realize that we stayed on the end of Cancun that is always last to be picked up for tours. We the spent the next two hours U-turning up and down the island of Cancun to get more passengers. On top to that, our guide booked some side deal to pick up an extra passenger and charge her cash. It's his right to make money, but it put the van over capacity and made us really late because we had to sit in traffic to get this one passenger.
When we finally arrived at Tulum, four hours after our initial pick up, we were late. Our guide told us we needed to buy a ticket to the tram not included in the tour in order to go to the ruins and have our provided guide. The cost was an extra 2 per person, which isn't that much but it was the principal of strong-arming our group into paying extra money. The guide went to get us tram tickets, but no one ever saw money exchange hands. Who knows? He could of kept it all.
Tulum was beautiful, but we only had 45 minutes before the guards started blowing whistles and kicking people out. Once again, this is because we were so late. It would have been nice to be there for a little bit of time.
Playa Del Carmen was nice. I ate at a restaurant off of 5th Avenue. 5th Avenue is a tourist trap and the prices are outrageous for common items.
To provide context, we could have driven to Chichen Itza twice in the time it took us to reach Tulum. No one was happy with the trip, and no one tipped the driver or the guide. Also, I was under the impression that the guide would guide us through Tulum. Instead we were given a federal guide, and our guide sat outside of Tulum.
There are many tours to Tulum. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE.
Tulum was beautiful. We had about 2 hours in Tulum and then we went to Playa del Carmen. 5th avenue is really touristy with lots of shops that you can find in Canada/US and also a great place to pick up some souvenirs but probably overpriced.
My daughter and I really enjoyed this tour apart from one aspect which I will mention later. The driver and guide picked us up promptly in a nice, air-conditioned bus. We were the first pickup and we had to drive to pick up another family which did not take too long. The drive to Tulum passed quickly - and the guide explained the plan for the day - expressing how important it was that we all kept to time. When we arrived at Tulum, we had expected to be able to take the 'train' to the entrance to the ruins but an incident meant that the train was not running so we had to walk the 1 kilometer in the extreme heat. We were meant to each be given a bottle of water, but the other family took all of it so there was none for me and my daughter. Our guide organized an archeological guide to take us for a tour of the ruins who showed us around the main part of the ruins for 45 minutes. We were then given 45 minutes free time, after being shown the way to the beach and the way back to the entrance. I don't think that 45 minutes is anywhere near long enough if you want to go to the beach and swim, so my daughter and I had a very quick look around headed back to where we were told to meet. There are plenty of places here to get drinks and food - including a Starbucks and a Subway. We were ready to depart on time but the other family finally turned up over 30 minutes late, We drove the 30-45 minutes to Playa del Carmen where we were to be taken to a short Tequila talk and then to a restaurant. There is no pressure to buy the tequila, we thought the restaurant a great choice. But that is all we had time to do - the other family turned up late yet again, meaning we stood waiting for another 30 minutes whilst they shopped in front of us. The tour was great, we saw everything that we wanted to see but our time was spoiled by the other family - the guide needed to be more firm with them. Drinks need to be handed directly to everyone - don't assume that people will do the right thing
This tour was amazing!
Didn't care for the playa del carmen tour as it is more for shopping. The Tulum trip was amazing. I wished the tour guides would be more informative of the actual tour and not just try to sell you the tequila from the shops at playa del carmen. Viator should include in their description that additional fees apply cash only to ride the train. Some people didn't have cash on them.
This tour was great. My 2 tour guides were very professional and also was very knowledgeable about history. Always made sure I was comfortable and checked if I needed anything. A must do tour!
