Upper Mustang is a region untouched and unchanged from outside cultures almost for centuries. It lies unseen behind the Himalayan gigantic Dhaulagiri and Annapurna at the very roof of Asia on the dry Tibetan plateau. It has long been separated from the outside world (and only opened to trekking groups since 1992!). As you make your way through this isolated land, along the way you can find brightly painted chortens (Buddhist shrines) and tiny villages guarded by enormous monasteries, unusual and arresting views of the snow-covered mountains to the south, and isolated high plateaus, deep canyons and an ocean of windswept hills the fabulous colors of a desert sunset to the north. At the walled capital city of Lo Manthang, youll absorb a great sense of time pieces and appreciation of ancient culture as you can monasteries rich in art and history, see the remnants of old forts and caves replete with magnificent religious statues.
History says Mustang is an old kingdom of Lo. The capital of the Mustang district is Jomsom, but the real distinctive Tibetan style district lies north of Kagbeni and is usually said to as Upper Mustang. Lo Manthang is the residential of present king, is a fantastic square-walled town sitting on the Plain of Prayers. Mustang is rich in Buddhist culture an enchanting land of windswept vistas, red walled monasteries, and feudal towns. This tiny kingdom was a major corridor of trade from the 1400s to Chinese.
