Know More about this tour

Meet your guide in Vatican City, and head inside the Vatican Gardens for your walking tour. A tranquil haven for the Vatican popes since the Middle Ages, the Vatican Gardens cover an impressive 57 acres (23 hectares) with meandering pathways, grottoes and fountains as well as a gorgeous Italian garden, bedecked with colorful flowers.

Stroll around with your guide, admiring highlights like the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto a favorite prayer spot of Pope Francis and his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI while learning about the gardens history. Dating back to the 13th century, the site started as a simple fruit orchard but was extended to a more lavish standard by subsequent papal generations.

After spending roughly 1.5 hours inside the gardens, head inside the Vatican Museums. Marvel at the Bramante Staircase a sloping spiral structure carved from stone by Renaissance architect Donato Bramante and then wander around rooms like the Gallery of Tapestries.

Hear tales of Renaissance artists favored by the Vatican like Raphael, and admire incredible Flemish tapestries that were designed by his pupils. Step inside the Gallery of Maps, and gaze in wonder at detailed fresco maps of 16th-century Italy.

Continue to the Sistine Chapel, the popes private place of worship, to see some of the most influential works of art in the Western world. Panel paintings by the likes of Botticelli and Perugino are incredible but pale in comparison to Michelangelos attention-grabbing twosome: the Creation of Adam and The Last Judgement.

Finish your tour with a walk around St Peters Basilica, the Vaticans magnificent domed church. After marveling at Michelangelos La Piet and a memorial to Pope John Paul, bid your guide goodbye and exit into St Peters Square.

  • We had a wonderful tour of the Vatican Gardens, including a sighting of Pope Francis as he was leaving his residence. The Gardens were even more beautiful than we expected. The Museums tour was excellent and we saw areas we hadn't been in before. And, of course, the visit to St. Peter's Basilica was equally wonderful. Our guide was knowledgeable, provided excellent information, was able to respond to questions without difficulty. Our pickup was seamless. We highly recommend this tour.

  • Excellent tour - our guide was literally an expert. She knew just about everything there was to know and our minds were brimming and overflowing with the information. The gardens were beautiful and since we were the only tour doing the gardens it was a lovely two hours on our own. The next FOUR HOURS was a bit of a nightmare on the feet. No lunch breaks! Wear the most comfortable shoes youve got because there was zero time to sit down. Eat a big breakfast and take some snacks with you as there is zero time for food and very minimal toilet stops. Once in the museums you are packed in like sardines - it wasn't my favourite thing to be honest. The tour then went to the Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, which was good but by then you're exhausted!

  • This tour was excellent. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very entertaining. The gardens were beautiful. It felt like we were seeing something very special. The Sistine Chapel was packed with people. It is beautiful, inspiring, but very crowded. I now understand why people say to get there very early. I would not have traded the walk through the gardens for an uncrowded Sistine Chapel though,

  • Ok. Nothing great. The tour guide was not very patient.

  • If you plan to go to the Vatican, do this early morning tour. It was like we had the gardens to ourselves. Didn’t see other tours until we were done with the gardens. Just beautiful. Highly recommend.

  • The guide was wonderful. She took the group to areas in the Garden not normally open, Museum she was very informative along with St Peters. Excellent experience and the only way to visit the Vatican.

  • Don't go to the Vatican if you're going to skip the gardens - cause they're arguably the best part. We booked this tour so we could see parts of the Vatican that most people don't see, and we're extremely glad we did. The gardens were beautiful and very well maintained. The tour guide was great, and did a nice job moving this along smoothly.

I will say, wear comfortable walking shoes, cause the tour is LONG. By the time it ended, we were more than ready for a break. But, if you've got limited time and want to get the most from your visit to the Vatican, this is the best option - hands down.

  • Excellent guide who was so informative that despite all the walking, we never lost interest in what knowledge she was imparting throughout. The Vatican gardens were a special delight to visit.Thoroughly recommended to all who have time to do more than just visit the skip the line Vaticans museum tour.

  • i felt very proud and lucky that i booked to Viator - it save me money and the hassle to deal with the lines. The tour was excellent and exclusive. the guide was very knowledgeable and patient.
She answered all the questions and even got out of her way to make this tour memorable.
I love using Viator for all my trips, the price, tour packages and companies they deal with are excellent.

  • It was our second visit to Vatican City. The tour itinerary is excellent and the tour of the Vatican gardens is well worth the walk. However our tour guides English was hard to understand. She was very nice and helpful to the guest but the language at times was a problem.
