Know More about this tour

Start your Viator Exclusive tour after early morning pickup from your Playa del Carmen hotel and take a scenic 90-minute drive to Coba. Join your guide, a certified archaeologist, for an in-depth tour of the ancient Mayan city, considered one of the largest pre-Columbian settlements of the Classic period. You’ll arrive at the site and take in this tranquility just in time to beat the crowds!

As you walk through the ruins of Coba, which in the Mayan language means ‘place of choppy water,’ your specialist guide provides informative commentary. Learn about the archaeological studies of the site, spanning approximately 43 square miles (70 square km), and the Mayan civilization that occupied it.

Hear about how the city developed around the surrounding five lakes, the water sources that supported about 50,000 inhabitants. Gain insight into the network of roads you come across during your tour, as well as large stone monuments called stelae, and hieroglyphic texts.

Huff your way to the apex of Nohoch Mul Pyramid, the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula, and from 140 feet (42 meters) above the rainforest floor, capture stunning panoramas of the rainforest jungle.

With this Viator Exclusive, your early morning visit to Coba allows you to discover the site at an easy pace, without worrying about crowds, and then experience another beautiful site after seeing the Mayan city. Continue on to a cenote, an underground cavern with a pool of water, and enjoy an hour of downtime in the naturally illuminated cave.

Wrap up your outing with a hearty buffet meal at a nearby restaurant featuring local cuisine, pastas, salads and desserts. Your tour ends with transport back to Playa del Carmen.

  • The tour itself was excellent. Our guide Alvarro was superb and driver Jorge was excellent. The ruins are quite something and the jungle setting puts them into context. The Cenote we visited was probably the best of the many I have seen. A vast underground Cathedral of a cavern, quite spectacular to see and even better to jump into and swim around. The only drawback was the poor organisation at the start. Our pick up was 45 minutes late and there were multiple stops to swap passengers around for other tours.

  • Amazing tour for the price!

  • The cobs ruins themselves were great and the tour was fantastic value compared to what we saw elsewhere (and were offered in our hotel).
    - Confirm pickup time from hotel was bad, phone number didn't work.
    - The guide spoke once for 30 mins on points about Coba and the Mayan so wasn't extensive

  • Very informative! Soffia was an awesome guide. And the ruins themselves were amazing! My favorite part was riding the bikes through the jungle to Coba. Super fun guys!

  • Trip was great except the start! When we booked, it said free hotel pickup included. Once we paid, we get an e-mail that says tour departs at 6:30, be at the meeting place by 6:25. The meeting place was about a 10 minute walk from our hotel and my husband has a bad knee so we took a taxi 70 pesos. The van arrives at 7:10 40 minutes late and then the driver announces that we have to stop at 3 hotels and then we will be on our way!! My husband questioned Alvaro as to why they made us meet here and now they were going to 3 hotels when our tour was also supposed to include free hotel pick up? He had an attitude and said if we wanted to not take the tour, we could get out of the van.. our choice?! First off, Our tour had a 7 day cancellation policy, so if we got out we would not get a refund so I calmed my husband down and off we went! After the other stops and the drive to Coba we actually arrived a little after 9am and it was still cool and not very many people. We enjoyed the ruins, the bicycle ride thru the jungle and the 45 minute swim in the Cenote. The buffet lunch was good not great, but filling. We were back to the meeting place in Playa del Carmen by 3pm and took another taxi back to our hotel. I would recommend the trip but as with most things in Mexico, don't expect it to start on time!!

  • Amazing tour. Again, I think exclusive is a deceptive way of promoting this. Less crowded than other ruins, but plenty of others there at the same time. The climb is amazing and scary! Bring good shoes. Cenote visit was fun as well.

  • I booked this tour well in advance for three adults and as per the email instructions called ahead to confirm our early pick up time. I was told to call back the day before, which I did. when I called I was told that my tour had been cancelled because there were not enough on our tour. They apparently require four persons for a tour. I did not get the impression that they would have notified me that we had been cancelled. I offered to pay for a fourth person 40 extra eventhough there was only three of us. They agreed to proceed with the tour for a 0620 am pick up. We waited and made phone calls and finally a driver showed up at 0710 but appeared rather unhappy to be there. We headed toward Coba, but made a stop at 7 Eleven to pick up our guide archeologist. She was very pleasant and knowledgeable. Our driver cheered up as the day progressed.
Overall, we had a good time and, basically a private tour. Our guide was great, but I would not label her an archeologist as suggested in the Viator description. We left at 710 am and returned at 230pm. We just got the impression that the trip was just a last minute throw-together by the company....
Overall a fun and safe trip

  • This was the best excursion ever with an absolutely fantastic price!
Our tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable about the ruins.
The only issue we had was trying to contact the tour company to confirm our pick-up time at our resort.
In the end I just ended up phoning viator customer service and they did a three way conversation with the tour company so everything got sorted out in the end. It was very difficult to phone a Mexico number while in Mexico if you don't speak the language. Viator customer service representative was excellent. I would recommend this company and the tour to everyone.

  • First, the tour was great. My family enjoyed Coba and the cenote very much. The 1 star rating is because of how hard it was to get our pick up time. The Viator voucher provided one email and a few phone numbers to get tour information directly from the local provider. I could not reach them. The day before our trip, I was so panicked, the on-site Lomas representative helped me contact someone, even though the tour had nothing to do with Lomas. Then, I finally got a surprise email from Viator with the pick up time. No information was ever provided to let me know that Viator would be emailing me my pick up time. Even if there was, I would have appreciated getting my pick up time much, much sooner. Yay tour, Boo Viator.

  • First of all the company who picked us up was over 2 1/2 hour late! I only received one email from the night before confirming our 6:50am pick-up. It also stated that we needed to be in from of our hotel lobby at least 15-30 mins prior to pick up. I was traveling with my entire family with 2 small kids who were troopers to wake up at 5am so we can be in the lobby in time.

2nd of all, the driver did not speak any English. Or so we think because he did not even talk to any of the passengers to let us know what was going on. It was not a guided tour. It was a self -guided tour with a driver. Our driver also kept on getting phone texts and muttering bad words in Spanish, probably getting scolded for being late all around. He would then drive like a maniac leaving everyone looking at each other and holding on to their seats for dear life!

When we got to each destination we were basically dropped off and left alone. Were told in the simplest form why we are there and how long we have. As part of our ticket to Coba, a tour guide met us, spoke to us for 20mins and let us alone to explore on our own.

The only thing fun was pretty much exploring on our own. Haha! I am not sure if viator hires 3rd party vendors/tour groups from around the world and finds the most affordable companies to do their tours, but I would suggest screening their vendors first before they contract with them.

I've used Viator a number of times since my family and I travel a lot. This was the first bad experience we had. I guess it's a hit and miss kind of thing. Our family had fun regardless.
