Know More about this tour

Start your tour with early morning pickup from your Playa del Carmen hotel for the drive south to Tulum, taking a break along the way for snacks (own expense). Your early wake-up call will be worth it when you arrive as one of the first visitors of the day to explore the wonders of Tulum, a fort and trading post overlooking the Caribbean Sea. With essential background knowledge provided by your group's own archeologist guide, youll easily imagine how this city once served as a major seaport.

Learn about the Mayans who inhabited this city and the archeological investigations of the site. Your guide will share information from studies strongly indicating that Tulum played an important role in Mayan civilization during the 13th and 14th centuries, part of the late Post-Classic age, based on the following factors: its key position along the coastline, considerable elevation above sea level and formidable defense system. Youll find it difficult to scale the stone wall enclosing most of the city center, measuring more than 1,100 feet long and 500 feet high (335 meters by 152 meters), which stands as the largest fortified Mayan site on the Quintana Roo coast.

As you wander through the ruins in tranquility and listen to waves lapping against the shore, try to visualize Tulum in its heyday using the archaeological evidence you just heard: The sun rises, casting a warm orange glow over the city. Out of the glittering Caribbean Sea, rows of enormous canoes, with impressive lengths of 52 feet (16 meters), pull up to shore, and traders from Central and South America climb out, their arms laden with spices, obsidian, precious stones, animal skins, salt and other rich marine resources. In the city, the traders walk past bright red and blue murals painted on stark white walls depicting spiritual themes.

Learn about how Tulum existed as a political settlement independent of other provinces, and then take a look around at the setting that makes it famous today the pristine sandy beaches and stellar views of the Caribbean Sea.

After your tour, relax with a box lunch during the transit back to your hotel in Playa del Carmen. With this Viator Exclusive, your early morning visit to Tulum allows you to explore the site before the crowds so you can enjoy the rest of your day on the beach!

  • While the site is certainly worthwhile to visit and the historical tour guide did a wonderful job in explaining the archeological and historical background thr tour organizer was under par. First the phone number and e-mail to confirm our hotel pick-up did not work. It took almost an hour and the help from the hotel to get in contact with amigotours in Mexico City. In this process also Viator was not of help because they only provide you with Q and A, but not with a actual person to help. One of their help links did not work as well. Also instead of being picked up at the hotel as advertised one needed to go to a meeting spot. The pick up was 40 minutes late. The tour overbooked hence the use of a minibus for 10 participants and an additional wait of 25 minutes. The advertised lunch was a very small bag of chips, a juice box and a candy. I would call this a snack. Why overselling? The instructions where to meet after the Tulum tour were unclear and we had to search for our bus. Better book local so that you have a person to rely on when needed.

  • The trip overall was as expected, good value for money. The pick-up car was on time.
I would suggest few improvements: speed up the communication from the excursion agencies. We booked the trip at lunchtime the day before and had to call them to confirm what time is the pick-up as on the confirmation it said 4am and we knew it won't be that early. The pick-up was not from the hotel but Playacar shopping square. We didn't mind but someone could. I had slight problems to understand the guide who spoke americanized English.

  • We were not happy with this trip. From the start, the schedule was late. Group was too big and the agreed timetables were not respected. We had to wait constantly on the trip.

  • Could have been much better.

    1. Was impossible to hear the commentary on the coach due to very poor laity PA.

    2. Take something to eat as 'lunch' was a small packet of crisps, small chocolate biscuit and a kids drink carton. Extremely disappointed.

Tulum itself is very interesting, and our guide was very good, although he did try and sell souvenirs too, which seemed bit strange.

All in all OK but a couple of small changes would have made the 2 stars at least 4!

  • Beautiful place. Not much to do but enjoy the sights. I went back in 2015 but just now got around to doing a review.

  • This tour was not what I thought I purchased. We were picked up 35 minutes late from our hotel I actually called the tour provider to see if they accidentally forgot to pick us up, and the representative said that our shuttle was having car problems because of the rain. When the shuttle finally arrived the other tour-goers said the shuttle was just late picking everyone up..., stopped at a gas station where our driver almost made us get on another, completely full shuttle, before waiting for a giant tour bus filled with 60 people.
The provided box lunch is handed to you at 7:30 a.m. which everyone thought was a breakfast snack, and promptly ate consisted of a bag of chips, a small candy bar, and juice box.
We arrived well after Tulum opened and did not have early access as the tour suggests, and the small space was shortly swarming with other tourists.
Our guides, while very nice, were definitely not archaeologists, and most of the tour sounded scripted and could have easily been read off of wikipedia. When asked a follow up question on a certain subject, our guide usually reiterated herself without offering new info.
The ruins are lovely and the view is amazing, but I didn't feel like I was given enough information on the tour to really understand or appreciate how special Tulum is.

  • Had to change buses twice. Slightly inconvenient. Did not go into details on Tulum. Actual guided tour was short but a lot of self guidance and a lot of time. Therewas no self-guided information given out. For the price of less than 30 it was very good.

  • This was a great trip, just offering what we needed. Early pick up to miss the crowds and heat of the day, knowledgable guide and some free time. Only criticism is we were left waiting for a while between transfers making us arrive to Tulum later than planned. This was apparently due to heavy rain.

  • This tour was absolutely fantastic being able to tour without any crowds was a definite bonus. Our guide Sera was lovely and so knowledgeable about everything regarding the ruins. Swimming in the ocean right by the ruins after the tour was over was
    absolutely amazing. Great Tour!

  • Enjoyed the trip but felt as though we were hurried through by our guide .you do have plenty of time on your own but need somebody to tell you about the area.the beach was very small and Rocky and the steps down to it are very steep so not good if your not good mobility wise.
