Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Porta San Donato

The tour begins in Piazzale Verdi at the old Porta San Donato where the tourist information centre is located, adjacent to the historic Renaissance walls.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: San michele in foro

From Piazzale Verdi, you will walk along Via San Paolino which corresponds to the ancient Roman street (Decumanus Maximus), passing by the Renaissance church dedicated to the Patron Saint of the town, San (Saint) Paolino. At the end of the street, behold Piazza San Michele, the area where the ancient Roman forum was located. Time to stop to photograph the spectacular facade of the 12th century church of the same name. Along the way, you will encounter Lucca's most famous celebrity, Giacomo Puccini, and see the exterior of the building where he was born. Still today, his operas fascinate audiences all around the world!

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Basilica of san frediano

Stroll along to reach Via fillungo, the main and busiest shopping street of the town where both traditional shops and medieval tower houses live. The two highest civic towers will also be covered: Torre delle ore (the tower with the clock) and the very particular Torre Guinigi, which is crowned by seven holm oak trees.
More surprises await, such as the stunning Byzantine-style mosaic on the facade of one of Lucca's best-loved churches: San Frediano.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Piazza anfiteatro

Just a few steps away from San Frediano church is one of the most beautiful squares in Lucca, Piazza anfiteatro. The elliptical shape of the characteristic piazza is due to subsequent construction of buildings over the foundations of the ancient Roman amphitheatre.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Lucca's Duomo (Cattedrale di San Martino)

A short walk along more medieval streets and you will reach the Cathedral of san martino with its unusual and striking Pisa-Lucca Romanesque facade. This is where the tour ends.
However, if you are not too tired, the guide will be very happy to continue the tour inside the Cathedral. There is a 2.00 entrance fee. In the interior, the Volto Santo (the Holy Face), an evocative wooden crucifix, highly venerated for centuries and the symbol of Lucca, an incredible Last Supper painted by Tintoretto, and, in the sacristy, the beautiful marble sarcophagus of Ilaria del Carretto, the early 15th century masterpiece sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia of Siena, await your visit.

My husband and I were coming from Milan by train and ran a few minutes late getting to our meeting place for this tour. Lucia was waiting patiently for us. As it turned out, we were the only people scheduled for the tour, so were lucky enough to have Lucia's undivided attention. She was patient, very knowledgable about the sites we visited and was happy to answer questions as they came up. A very earnest and smart guide. Highly recommend!

Our guide, Victoria, was fabulous. Extremely knowledgeable and provided a great overview of Lucca. Only issue was the group was too big, 37 people and no headphones were provided making it hard to hear everything.

Bilingual is nice when earphones are used. But with a guide it was awful, especially this one. Explanations were too long, people needed to wait around. Then she lost us, since she used no recognizeable item that could lead us to her. People simply walked off when she was dealing with the Italian guests, and then she didn't wait for anyone to reappear. This tour was a total waste of time and all of the English speaking guests should be refunded. We alone were a family of five.

I have done the walking tour of a Lucca 3 times, and each time learn many new things. On this tour Our guide Victoria is a published author of a book about Lucca, so she shared with us many interesting details and observations about this beautiful city. She carefully highlighted many of the historical, cultural and architectural points of interest during our tour, and was wonderful in answering questions about everything from music, art exhibits and school programs in Lucca. She was very organized and kept us together at a reasonable, relaxed pace. I would definitely go again!

Diogi our driver was simply an amazing guide to this beuatiful area. He knew his way around and especially how to avoid long lines making the day a much more pleasant experience. His knowledge of the out of the way Sintra beaches was a highlight as well. Ask for Diogi and you will not be disappointed!

This was a good tour and run well. A lot of information I had gleened from the Aperitivo Tour the day before. However, it was good to get another slant on some sites.
