Know More about this tour

Head through the dark heart of the restricted areas of the Colosseum underground in a group of just 24 people, right into the chambers where the gladiators once prepared for battle next to fierce beats waiting in cages, before making their appearance on the arena floor. During this tour you will also walk on the arena — the stage where the whole show happened — and you will climb up to the third floor.

Dive into Ancient Rome history and start your journey into the subterranean area of the world’s most famous amphitheater, the Colosseum. During this tour you will visit not only the underground area, but also the other sections of the Colosseum that limit regular visitors: the sandy arena where battles took place and the third level, from where you can admire the Colosseum in all its magnificence, as well as a view of the rest of the ancient city.

Leaving the Colosseum, follow your guide to the archaeological area of the Roman Forum. Walk along Via Sacra, the main street of Ancient Rome, and reach the heart the Forum, where the empire's main religious and political buildings once stood — and sometimes still stand. See the Temple of the Vestal Virgins — it is here that the Roman priestesses tended the eternal flame of Rome — and the Roman Senate where decisions were taken that changed the course of history; admire the triumphal Arch of Septimius Severus, the Arch of Titus, and the Arch of Constantine, named for the emperor who, by defeating his archrival, Maxentius, set the groundwork for the decline of the pagan world and the rise of Christianity. Then explore Palatine Hill, the most ancient part of Rome, where you'll hear about Romulus and Remus, the twin founders of this historical city. From here you will enjoy one of the most spectacular views of Rome ever.

After hours of intense history and sightseeing, your tour concludes back in the Roman Forum where you will be free to stay as long as you want.

Please note that the Colosseum and Roman Forum are ancient sites and not wheelchair friendly due to the steep stairs and uneven ground. Because of the extensive walk and little opportunity to sit and rest, it is also encouraged that children and infants be carried.

  • This tour was truly amazing because it wrapped so much ancient Roman history into one manageable tour. Our guide's prior experience as an archaeology student added significant value to the tour. In addition to her pride in taking part in the actual digs at the Forum, she was able to provide details that only someone with her background could have. Her description of the Forum and Palatine Hill transformed them from ruins to living structures in our minds. The guide within the Colosseum itself also did a wonderful job of explaining the history and social aspects of that structure.

  • The tour was led by an archeologist and you can really feel the passion he has for the Colosseum and the ruins. He had a wealth of knowledge and made us feel as if we were back in time. We skipped the long lines which was also a plus!

  • This was something I was looking forward to seeing, and it didn't disappoint. This tour is fantastic, I would highly recommend it. Starting at ground level then going underground and then finishing on the top tier was not only interesting, but also great to see. I would do this tour again if I returned to Rome.

  • We had visited the Colosseum previously, but this tour offered the opportunity to visit the underground areas, as well as the higher level, so we looked forward to a different perspective. As a small group tour, the guide was very knowledgeable and provided an interesting and informative dialogue of the 4 hours. The access and viewing of the Palatino and Forum was excellent, and most of the Colosseum tour met expectations. the underground component was underwhelming. Apparently due to set up for a concert, we were unable to venture into many areas - what we saw of the tunnels, staging, and viaducts was interesting, but underwhelming compared to the expectation.

  • The tour was awesome and the tour guides very informative. I didnt know this tour started in Palatine Hill, which was nice but loads of walking, so by the time we started the Colosseum tour, my feet were already hurting, lol. Just make sure to bring comfortable shoes, I wore flat sandals. Maybe snickers would have been better option :

  • This was an excellent tour and would high recommend it. The visit to Ancient Rome was perhaps a bit long and tiring in the heat. Good walking shoes a must. The Colosseum was terrific with access to the upper and lower ground level. Would highly recommend this tour.

  • The experience and tour were awesome. The only thing that was not excellent was the tour guide in the Colosseum. She had a heavy accent and was difficult to understand, at times. The Viator tour guide, Nadia, was excellent, spoke good English, was well informed, and was very personable. This Walking Tour is definitely worth it.

  • Really good tour, guide loved his subject was well read around the subject and answered questions well. English was excellent. It was very hot so we could have done with a couple more water stops. Great experience.

  • This is a must do tour. Highly recommend.

  • Fantastic! Our guide, Beautrice took us on our tour for the Palatine and Roman Forum. She was so so knowledgable and spoke amazing English. She gave a great insight into life there. Colleseum tour was great but guide Tara was difficult to understand. Private areas great but guide cld be better
