Overview

This is a walking tour of Split with a local historian! I will guide you through all of the relevant sites in the center of Split in a logical manner following the cities development through time.

I have a Master's degree in history, so I can provide much more knowledge than what is learned at a tour guide course. I have years of study and passion for history behind me and I am really trying to carry that forward. Also, I am a local, born and still living in Split!

I combine that with the expertise and education I gained as a teacher to make my tours a logical and pragmatic experience.

I speak fluent English and I enforce dialogue as much as I can during my tours since it provides much more personal contact with the guide and it's easier and more enjoyable to learn that way.

I will present you with 3D reconstructions of the sites, which are a result of my own work and dedication, in order to bring the past to life for the visitor!

Know More about this tour

Split's Riviera, the most important site for all of the local residents. There are some graphic and model representations here that I use for an introduction to what is going to be shown inside the Palace. Also, the southern wall of Diocletian's Palace is beautifully seen from that spot.
All the little details I will be showing you on the way, noble palaces, and many other things. Even though Split is most notable for its attractions from the Roman times, the City is filled with many medieval, renaissance and early modern age heritage.
The central square of Diocletian's Palace and one of the most important squares of the city today. We will be able to see some incredibly preserved Roman structures, and I will show you my 3D reconstructions of the area to give you a better idea of how much of the decorations and buildings are still original.
The Cathedral or the grave of emperor Diocletian (Mausoleum) is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in the city, and it's still in use to this day! I will explain everything you need to know about it, the bell tower and how it was converted from a grave to a Cathedral by the Christians. We will not be entering inside, but everything that needs to be know about will be said.
The Temple of Jupiter, as they call it, is one of the best-preserved late-roman temples in the world. Here I will show you some anomalies and mistakes that the Romans did as they were constructing it! We will not be entering the temple, as I will show you everything relevant from the outside.
Eastern entrance to Diocletian's Palace. Here is one of the best views of the Palace, with the Cathedral (Mausoleum) on one side, the Silver Gate on the other, and beneath us the only preserved part of the original road.
Dominant and recognisable statue, a landmark of Split. I will explain you what it represents and what it means for Croatian language and culture of the early medieval times.
Ancient entrance to Diocletian's private residence. From here I take you around the remains of Emperor's Diocletians's private residence.
All the various palaces of noble families that we will see on our way through the Palace.
All the various palaces of noble families that we will see.
I will show you all of the filming locations of Game of Thrones in Split that we are traveling by if the group is interested. Also, we are passing by the fan shop.
The main entrance to the Palace. The Golden Gate is the most preserved out of 4 entrances to the palace and also most decorated and most memorable. Also, the entire northern wall is visible form here and we can see how the medieval city was still using all of the Roman-made structures for defense, and how they removed what they didn't need.
City Museum of Split is situated within one of the best-preserved and most beautiful renaissance noble Palaces. We are not entering the museum itself, but only its courtyard to see the renaissance palace from within. Here I also like to explain our Venetian history, since these kinds of palaces started to appear in their time.
Here is where we end the tour, on Piazza Square. That is the main square of the city since medieval times. It is the most natural place to end the tour since everything else is easily reachable from here. On the square, we can see the 14th century Town Hall and other interesting structures.

We visited Split about 1 0 years before this trip and when we were here we toured the Diocletian's Palace with the aid of a guidebook. When I found this tour, I was excited to take a deeper dive into Split and its sites. We were not disappointed. Our guide Toni was fabulous! His stories and details brought to life places we had seen before and pointed out sites we had missed on our first trip.

Toni was an excelent guide. He was knowledgeable and spoke with passion. Questions were very welcome and my wife and I had lots.

We had been to Split 14 years ago with another guide and had thought to just stroll around on our own until I read about the Magister. Then we just had to join his tour to get an in depth historical view, not just the basics. It was totally worth it. Due to our cruise port’s awkward timing, Tony made a special tour time to accommodate myself, my adult daughter and another couple. We learned so much, had all our questions answered and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Tony spoke perfect English and was easily understood whether in a cellar or outdoors among the crowds. If you are at all interested in the history of the Diocletian Palace, sign up with Tony’s tour.

Toni was an excellent guide for our first visit to Split. He was so knowledgeable and had us hooked from start to finish with his commentary on the city’s history. He is native to Split and clearly loves the city and country. We would definitely recommend this tour with him to anyone.

Toni is an insightful and passionate guide with a deep knowledge of his native city. We learned so much and the time flew by. The history came to life and not a moment was dry--even those who aren't history buffs will find this interesting. If you like history, you will be elated. Toni answered everyone's questions and had us fully engaged. I highly recommend this tour.

Highly recommend. You will learn so many interesting facts and want to go home and share it all with your family! They may or may not be interested! But we were fascinated!

I was very satisfied with this tour, and the information I received from our guide. I learned details about the Palace I had not learned on a previous tour, taken 6 years ago.

This walking tour was great and definitely think it’s the best one. He is so knowledgeable about the area, culture and history. Doesn’t go into information overload but gives you a really good understanding and explains it very well. This is slightly more expensive than other tours but I think you get what you pay for, other tour guides were coming and going quickly between sites and he takes time to explain. He is also very open to questions and went into detail about something I asked which was great.

Toni was very knowledgeable about Split and the Palace. He shared many interesting stories and interesting points throughout the morning. I especially liked his 3D pictures of the Palace which showed how it would have looked. This made us better appreciate what we were seeing. I would highly recommend this tour if you want to truly appreciate Split and the Diocletian’s Palace. Toni’s love of Split and his Croatian history was evident throughout the tour and appreciated by all in the tour.
