Are you craving a historical military-based adventure in Barbados? Have you ever wondered what military life was like during the colonial period? Then boy have I got a story for you!

I was here to defend this gem of an island and it was nothing like what I would have expected as a soldier. My story is bittersweet, but nonetheless, has to be told. I want to tell you about the prison and the walk of shame I had to endure. About the services offered around the Savannah and all the joys that can be drawn from this area despite the hardships that have made it what it is.

Join me by the Barbados Museum and Historical Society for a culturally rich journey into history. On this intriguing walking tour, I will show you the Garrison I lived in. The changes it has undergone. All the while paying homage to me by preserving my legacy.

Know More about this tour

You get to try and enjoy the various modes of transportation on the island as you make your way to the Barbados Museum for the start of your tour. You should allow for at least 15 minutes before the official start of the tour in order to get your personal audio devices and snacks. While you are on island time your guides will aim for a prompt start for your 3-hour tour. This tour can be a little bit longer if you have tons of questions as your guides want to ensure you get to hear this rich history of this newly designated UNSECO Heritage area.

As we leave the former prison turned Museum, we travel around the Garrison and see the many barracks and get a sense of what life for the soldiers was like at that time. On the journey through this historic area, you will hear stories about hurricanes, wars, forts and cannons, the birth of horse racing and cricket as well as about the Court Martials and the famous house where George Washington stayed on his visit to this island.

A few intriguing stories along the way will bring it all together. A tasting and sample along the way, completes this tour which was made even more comfortable with the aid of your audio equipment. No more running to catch up to hear what the guide has to say! Take your time and hear as though he/she is right there talking to you alone. What a wonderful experience awaits you on a walking tour of the historic Garrison and its Museum, Barbados.

I have been to Barbados several times and have never been on the tour. Going on the tour with my family was very informative and enjoyable. Highly recommended.

So glad I did this. Would have been easy to drive by and never understand the depth of history around this area. Fantastic old buildings, good information. Let’s hope some of the vacant ones are bright back to life

Best area in bridgetown. Steeped in history abs beautiful old building. Our guide was great and passionate about their history. Sad to see some in states of disrepair but hope that Barbados values their stock of heritage buildings.

Zachary was our guide and told us lots of interesting details about this historic building. He set a good pace and was open to answering all of our (numerous) questions. Despite it being a cloudy and rainy day. We appreciated the personal touch.

So Barbados is a bit of a tropical paradise no doubt. But, if you believe that you need to understand the history of a place (warts and all) to really understand and appreciate that paradise, this is the tour for you! Duration was around 3 hours and includes a bag of maps, water and snacks ( peanuts, raisins) and the all important headphones to hear the guide. The guide, for us, was the incredible Deborah a lady born and raised in Barbados. Fiercely / rightly proud of her home and super enthusiastic about its future in the world. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of dates, times places. In addition to the facts, she wove Barbadian folklore into the mix, story’s passed down to her from parents, grandparents. It made you feel special and sort of privileged. You also get to visit the museum and old garrison buildings I have loved my time here, all the people, boat trips Hilton Hotel, but this trip made me feel part of it. In my opinion it’s worth every penny ( other denominations apply) Thank you Jo

A must for visitors to Barbados. Our tour started promptly with all the necessary Covid checks and sanitation at 9:30. Our tour guide had a passion for her country and its rich history which was conveyed throughout. She was very knowledgeable and is always keeping up to date with new findings. Our tour operator was Deborah who is extremely friendly and made the experience very enjoyable. 10/10 for her effort.

Thoroughly enjoyed this short tour of the garrison and museum. Zach guided us and he was awesome. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The pace of delivery was excellent and at no time was it too much information. After walking around the garrison and learning the history of the different buildings, we we escorted around the museum. We were first showed into the new children's part of the museum which we thought was strange at first, especially when shown the Interactions and activities....... however it was really enjoyable! Very reminiscent of the science museum's young person's area. Very glad we were showed this new part of the museum. Zach then showed is around the museum's exhibitions, highlighting points of interest; again, really excellent. Great tour, would definitely recommend and would not hesitate to use the company again. Perfect.

My guide Deborah lives overlooking the garrison and knew so much about the area from way back when the soldiers lived in tents on the now race course right up until todays date. Most knowledgeable and she made the stories come to life, making what might have been boring history most interesting. Nice touch having the bag with water and some snacks to keep you going. Even though there was just the two of us, to make this a covid secure tour she used a microphone and I had an audio receiver,. Cannot recommend highly enough, if you are staying in the area it is a must do.

This tour is a great way to gain an insight into the Garrisons history. Deborah is very informative and fun which made the tour really enjoyable. We were provided with headphones to ensure we could hear all of the interesting detail whilst maintaining a safe distance, so felt very safe. We only wished we had done this tour earlier in our break. Thanks Deborah

We had passed this area several times before and assumed it was just about horse racing. It is actually part and parcel of British military history as well as the existence of Roundheads and Royalists and why there was the emigration to this colony as it was then.. History from a knowledgeable Guide. Cromwell may not have come here but others did. We toured the Garrison area and ended up in the Museum. Water and snacks, stops in the shade by our considerate Guide, made this a rather enjoyable Tour.
