A short walk takes you to the top of the island where you will be exposed to breathtaking panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its surrounding peaks.
Our water taxi leaves Wanaka Marina twice-daily travelling 15km up Lake Wanaka, passing Mou Tapu Island and the steep cliff of fisherman's cove to Mou Waho Island. Your friendly and knowledgeable skipper will inform you of the fascinating geology of the alps and the glaciers that created the lake as you travel along its sparkling waters.
Trip includes a 1.5 hour freedom walk on the island.

Know More about this tour

Of Lake Wanakas 5 islands Mou Waho Island is the most remote and most beautiful.
With its steep rocky coastline, small secluded beaches, diverse bird life and hidden lake (Arethusa pool) which sits atop the island.

Travel in our comfortable water taxi 15km up the lake, taking in views of the Harris and Buchannan Mountains as your skipper explains some of the history and fascinating geology of this stunning area.

After disembarking at the small jetty on the island you will have 1.5 hours to yourself to enjoy this special place. A 20 minute hike brings you to the hidden lake, created by glacial action thousands of years ago when large glaciers filled the valley. A small rocky island on the lake gives us the island on a lake, on an island on a lake on an island on the sea confused? carry on walking for another 5 minutes to the top of the island (Tyrwhitt Peak) and everything will fall into place as the views opens up to reveal both lakes and a panorama of jagged peaks.

Mou Waho Island is a predator free nature reserve with interesting and diverse bird life.

Kereru (Wood pigeon) Korimaka (Bell Bird), Tomtits and Weka can be seen on the island.

A large flightless bird the Weka, disappeared from the mainland in the 1920s and were introduced to the islands as part of a breeding program in 2002. They are a charismatic birds who are often attracted to human activity which makes an encounter with these cheeky characters a highlight for many visitors to the island.

The small sheltered beach near the jetty is a great place to relax after your hike or cool off on those hot dry Wanaka days with a swim in the bracing waters of Lake Wanaka.

Join us for a trip to an island on a lake on an island on the lake on an island on the sea!

Had a wonderful time sailing around Lake Wanaka and exploring the Mou Waho island. Our guide, Brent, was super personable and very knowledgeable about the area, its history, and the lake's land formations. He made the whole time very comfortable and interesting. The island is small and has a lovely in and out walk to a secluded lake and lookout. It's about 20-25 up, 15ish going down, and is a bit muddy and steep in some parts, but nothing strenuous or remotely challenging. The whole boat tour has been one of our highlights to our time in Wanaka. Would highly recommend the Wanaka Water Taxi trip to Mou Waho.

Wonderfully informative ride with skipper Brent. He was knowledgeable and also allowed plenty of time for us to explore the island. Views on the trip and from the island were stunning. Use Brent and support the locals. A great way to spend a few hours in Wanaka.

What a really fabulous thing to do on Lake Wanaka. My daughter had done it some years ago and suggested we do it. It certainly lived up to our expectations. Good to see the lake and this island is a long way up so you get to see a lot. And what a great commentary from our skipper Brent. We have lived here for a few years but learnt so much in just 3 hours, which was an added bonus as we didn’t expect this. It was a gentle climb to the top. And boy what a view! There is an island in a lake, on an island in a lake, on an island in the ocean! Brilliant! A must do.

This was a fabulous tour from start to finish. Brent was very informative and helpful, telling us all about the local history of the islands we passed on the way to Mou Waho. We were lucky enough to have a brilliant day with the sun shining and not too cold. The walk up to the top of the island was challenging at times - there are walking sticks on board the boat to use if needed - but the view from the top was absolutely worth it. We were so very lucky also to have a local Weka hang around our group. Plenty of bird life to see and hear - the NZ Bellbirds were in full song on our way up. Magic. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour.

Had a lovely time on Mou Waho. About a 45 minute trip there with a few sight seeing stops on the way. Went with two kids, both enjoyed the wildlife and scenery.

A brilliantly sunny warm day for a trip with Brent our skipper and Krystle our hostess. Krystle passed on to us her great knowledge of Lake Wanaka and its islands as we travelled out into the lake. First stop Ruby Island where it’s history was explained by Brent. An interesting dialogue. On to MoU Waho Island where we disembarked and prepared for our walk to the top. This is not for the feint hearted and one of our party was only able to get half way. Those passengers who did the whole climb were amazed with its beauty. Thank you Brent and Krystle for a great half day out. If you are in Wanaka this trip is highly recommended.

The trip to Mou Waho where we learned more than we had ever known before about NZs glaciers, lakes and mountain formation, thank you so much Brent and Krystle. Over many years we have done scores of boat trips in and around NZ and this has to be number one. Beautiful weather, fantastic views, a lake like glass.

Spent an enjoyable afternoon travelling to Mou Wahou Island via Motapu Island (history stop only). Basically a shuttle service but provided an informative commentary along the way. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. MoU Wahou itself is an attractive location on the lake, with a short steep trail to the top of the island. The views are commanding and there was time to swim in Arethusa’s pool on the island or in Lake Wanaka itself, before the return journey

Most magical swim ever, can highly recommend just getting the taxi and walk up… the water was blissful!
