Know More about this tour

Meet your guide in Dublins Heuston Station in early morning and set off on a scenic rail journey to Kilkenny. Often hailed as the most attractive city in Ireland, Kilkenny is famous for its postcard-perfect medieval looks and its historical cathedrals, abbeys and castles.

Stroll around the cobbled streets and get an overview of the citys history and top sights. Afterward, you'll enjoy free time, during which you might choose to pop into the renowned Kilkenny Design Centre, which stocks Irish fashion and handcrafts, or pay an entrance fee to visit Kilkenny castle, a restored 12th-century castle that sits on the banks of the River Nore. Should you feel hungry, recharge with some refreshments (own expense) at a local cafe.
Next, leave Kilkenny by train and arrive in the waterfront city of Waterford, one of Irelands oldest settlements. Youll enjoy free time to wander through the medieval narrow alleys and the busy port, or to grab a quick lunch at a local restaurant (own expense).
Then, meet your guide at the Waterford crystal factory in the heart of the city. This renowned crystal producer, which has been operating for more than 200 years, has made many coveted and famous objects, including the Times Square New Years Eve Ball in New York City. Let a guide take you through the factory, where youll gain insight into the process of crystal making, from the art of crystal blowing through to cutting and engraving.
In late afternoon, leave Waterford by train and enjoy a scenic journey through the Suir Valley in County Tipperary. From the window, look out upon farmland, mountains and rivers. Change trains at Limerick for an express journey back to Dublin, where your tour finishes.

We had a great tour to Waterford, mainly due to our wonderful guide Paddy! Everything that we expected we got, and then some. Would do it again anytime.

I was pleasantly surprised when we found out there were only six of us on the tour. John was our guide and he did a great job of explaining what would be happening as we went along. We felt safe and looked after. He went above and beyond the expected. All of us in our little group had become friends by the end of the tour.

Our tour guide, Paddy, made this already great tour delightful. This was our only rail tour but would do it again vs travel by bus on small, windy roads (though that was fun too). There is more to Waterford than glass and Paddy took us on the Viking history walk. We had plenty of time for lunch and the factory tour of Waterford crystal. Recommend this tour, especially if you enjoy a train ride.

The countryside of Ireland is so beautiful to see and the whole tour is well done. John was amazing and made sure the entire group had fun together. Seeing how crystal is made and the detailing was so awesome.

Our tour guide was an older gentleman but kept us on the move. He was very knowledgeable and had good local contacts. I would have preferred to spend a lot less time at the church in Kilkenny and had more time in town. But this stop seemed important to the guide. After the Waterford factory tour leave immediately and go across the street to the fantastic Medieval Museum. The tour and exhibits are incredible and will be the highlight of your visit.

We had a great day, filled with wonderful experiences. We especially lived the Waterford Tour, but what made the day most special was the great tour guide we had. John was very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with us giving us historical facts and information about the areas we were seeing. He made it extremely interesting and informative!

Paul the train/tour/tram guide was funny, and informative in the town of _ilenny. [My cay doesn't wor_]
Waterford staff were so nice, and the tour was delightful. My favorite town.

The train ride was just beautiful through the rolling hills and farms . There were vibrant green fields of every shade. There were sheep, cows, horses and castles. The Kilkenny stop was magical. A smaller city than Dublin, had all the charm of what we anticipated an Ireland town. Waterford was also beautiful. The Waterford factory itself was a great experience. Our tour Guide, Paddy, was informative about all aspects of the tour and would point out historical items even on the train. After Waterford the train took a different route back to Dublin though the smaller towns . The train tour was well worth the money. Please be aware that there is still quite a bit of walking.

This was the first tour we took with Rail Tours. Unfortunately we did not know that other tours were leaving from the same location in Dublin at approximately the same time. So, when the announcement was made to follow the yellow jackets and get on the train, we did. Our ticket was stamped and we boarded it. We waited about 10mins until the train started to move. It was at that time that a Rail Tours person checked our tickets and informed us we were on the train to Cork and not Waterford.

We know it was our fault for not checking with them as we boarded the train, but it was our first tour. They should always check everyone's ticket before they board the trains. They should also tell everyone when you check in that other tours are there as well.

On the positive side, David from Rail Tours was extremely helpful and made sure we had an enjoyable day to Cork, the Blarney Castle, and Cobh. The tour we took was very good. And he was wonderful.

This is a good day trip from Dublin to view some scenic countryside and visit too historic cities in Ireland. There is early departure from Dublin Hueston station but a comfortable train ride to Kilkenny. The main attraction here is the Kilkenny Castle which has interesting history and largely restored. Across the street is the Fashion Design center that is worth a visit and has a nice pastry and food service restaurant. A good place to take a rest before going back to the train station to catch the train to waterford. This is scenic trip as well and Waterford is very interesting in the history of Ireland. The main attraction is the Waterford Crystal factory where you see the making of crystal from the moulding of the crystal design, to the blowing of the crystal into mould, and on to the cutting of the crystal into beautiful pieces. After this there is rather long train ride back to Dublin, but you will see some beautiful countryside and enjoy a relaxing ride on the train. A day trip worth taking if you visit Ireland.
