Know More about this tour

Our cultural and spiritual tour of the city will begin with a walk through the cosy and tranquil residential streets of Saga Arashiyama. This quaint suburban village was originally outside of Heiankyo the name given to ancient Kyoto and functioned as a restful resort for the city's noble families.

Well cross the main street, which is brimming with colourful craft shops and mouth-watering street food stalls and make our way to the famous Bamboo Grove of Arashiyama. Often mistakenly referred to as a forest, it is in fact a grove, as bamboo is not a tree, its actually a type of grass.

As we stroll, the bamboo gently sways in the breeze, with dramatic streaks of sunlight shimmering through the tall emerald stalks, giving you a sense of slipping back in time or entering into another world.

Halfway through the bamboo grove, well reach the compact but highly detailed Nonomiya shrine. This ancient 9th-century structure was originally a sacred site for the purification and preparation of the priestesses of the Ise Grand Shrine. Today, it is a peaceful place where believers quietly ask their deities for a happier domestic life.

At the top of the grove well wander through pretty Kameyama Park before reaching the mighty Hozu river valley. Well walk along the river, enjoying its lush surroundings, passing quirky shops, restaurants and historical sites as we go.

Well stop on Togetsukyo Bridge, which literally means Moon Crossing Bridge, where we can take in pretty vistas and admire the swooping cormorant birds. During the summer months, trained cormorants are used in a method of fishing calledukai, where the birds catch the fish for the fishermen.

Next up, well stroll along the river until the end of the footpath. We then continue our way up the winding, ancient stone steps of Daihikaku Senkoji Temple. Its located on the side of a scenic mountain with panoramas of the Hozu River valley, Arashiyama area, and Kyoto City on the horizon. On clear days you can even see to the top of the five-tiered Pagoda of Ninnaji Temple, far into the distance.

Here you will have a unique opportunity to encounter Zen by engaging in authentic Zen meditation under the guidance of a resident monk. Well also partake in a traditional matcha green tea ceremony, one of the hallmarks of Zen Buddhist culture.

After your Zen experience, well leave the temple grounds and head back along the Hozu riverside to the lively main road of Arashiyama where our tour ends, outside the Randen Keifuku Arashiyama station, which is the terminus for the old tram or streetcar.

The station area provides an assortment of eating and shopping options for you to indulge in. There is also a glowing display of beautiful Kimono fabric patterns in transparent tubes, known as the Kimono forest. We also recommend the foot spa, where natural spring water can soothe your weary feet.

I loved this experience, and I think you will too! Ko, our guide, was a pleasure to chat with on the small hike up to the temple. He was a fantastic photographer for us in the bamboo forest. Lastly, he was clearly knowledgeable and gave us foundational context to Kyoto, the forest, and Zen Buddhism. The small, but steep, hike up to the Zen temple was totally worth it. Ko acted as a translator while we were guided by Osho, a Zen monk through meditation and a tea ceremony. This tour was a highlight of our 2 weeks in Japan. Thank you Ko, and thank you Osho!

Today we visited Bamboo grove, Nonomiya shrine and the Daihikaku Senkouji temple. Our guide Fumiko was just lovely and very informative. The group was small, felt very casual and felt more like a group of friends going on an adventure. We met a monk of the temple and got to practice zen meditation and learn traditional tea ceremony. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone!

Ko’s a cool guide. He made the experience pretty much chill but informative at the same time. The path leading to the temple is breathtaking. The quiet moment with the monk and the discussion with him, through the excellent assistance of Ko, is something that is one for the books for my husband and I. It felt so special. It was a pause from life that I felt we needed. Meditation is something that I have always wanted to learn personally, and being able to learn it from a monk just made it incredible and I am grateful for that opportunity. The tea ceremony added to the serenity and mindfulness that the experience promised to offer. Insights from Ko, particularly the spiritual history of Japan, is very much appreciated by my husband and I as it was our first trip in Japan. We made the right decision booking this experience. The sights along the walk were as beautiful as we expected it to be. It was a day of less tourists around, so we got lucky seeing more and having a quiet walk. Our chats along the way were fun, too. We are glad to have met Ko as he did his job very well. Thankful for this experience! :)

Fabulous guide and a really different and interesting tour. The guide constantly thought of our needs and we had an amazing time with the monk and climbing the steps to get there.

Starting off with a trip through the famous bamboo grove we were introduced to the significance of the various shrines and temples we came upon as we walked. The tour continued up to a small shrine where we got to participate in a meditation session and a traditional tea ceremony with a local monk. We came here during the autumn season so the view was stunning even if it was quite crowded. Our guide Ko was great fun to hang out with and was very knowledgable making this into a really fun tour.

In this small group tour, we went through the Bamboo Forest, Nonomiya-shrine, and met with a Zen Buddhist monk in Daihikaku-Senkoji. the walk along the river and the climb to Daihikaku-Senkoji was so beautiful, and the time we spent there helped me learn so much about Japanese Zen Buddhism. it was an intimate talk, where we could ask anything, participate in small rituals, and really get the feeling of it all. Nobumasa Miyake san was very knowledgeable, and led the group in a most pleasant and patient manner.

I had always been very interested in Zen Buddhism and the philosophy behind it. This was a rare opportunity to get to immerse myself into their genuine culture and learn about it from a monk himself. The tour was really well constructed, and our guide Masayo was so knowledgable. She told us about the history of Kyoto, the significance of the bamboo grove, talked us through the different temples we passed and taught me how to properly say a prayer at a temple! We proceeded to trek through the breathtaking scenery, with Masayo continuously telling us about key facts to do with significant pieces of history to do with the Arashiyama and Kyoto area. Eventually we made it to the temple and sat down with the amazing Monk. Together we chanted the scriptures and then he gave us a really informative introduction to Buddhism and the principles! We mediated together and then enjoyed the tea ceremony. In my opinion, I could have sat and talked with everyone forever! We all learned a lot from each other and the different cultures and religions we come from. This was genuinely a once in a life time experience for me personally. If you want to explore the area at Arashiyama and want to immerse yourself in genuine Zen Buddhist culture, then don’t hesitate and book this brilliant tour!
