Know More about this tour

Meet at the Wellington i-SITE Visitor Centre to board an air-conditioned minivan that takes you from downtown to the Weta Workshop.

During the 20-minute ride, watch a short video welcome from Richard Taylor, who co-founded Weta with Tania Rodgers, Jamie Selkirk and Peter Jackson in 1987. Your local driver shares facts about Wellington’s history and its role in creating some of the biggest films in the world.

The Weta Workshops team became famous for the sets, costumes, armor, weapons, creatures and miniatures they designed and manufactured for The Lord of the Rings movies. They have also collaborated with Steven Spielberg on The Adventures of Tintin and James Cameron on Avatar.

You'll learn more about how Weta Workshop has collaborated with these famous folks, among others, when you arrive for a behind-the-scenes documentary that include interviews with Taylor and Jackson. Afterward, head back out to meet your guide for a tour of the Weta Cave exhibition space. Get a glimpse into the magic behind the movies as members of the Weta team show off props, models and weapons. During your tour, hear fascinating stories about the history of the company. If you're lucky, you might catch the design and production teams at work when you look through windows that open into the heart of the workshop.

If you want to snap up a memento, browse the on-site gift shop for prop replicas, LOTR art prints, jewelry, and more.

After about two hours, reboard your shuttle for the return trip to downtown Wellington where your tour ends.

  • Great to learn more about how movies are made. The commentary about Wellington from the tour bus driver was fabulous too.

  • Great tour for the movie buff.

  • Awesome tour and if you have ever wondered about makeup or prosthetics or movie magic, this will inspire you

  • Was well worth doing, highly reccommend.

  • If you are a Lord of the rings or Hobbit fan this is a must and the behind the scenes tour was brilliant.

  • Tour was good but would not recommend going on weekends as most of the working demonstrations were not available. Just empty windows where the demonstrations would have been.

  • Our guide was very informative and we got a chance to talk to an expert in the workshop. Our guide asked us what we wanted to know whereas I would have liked her to talk about everything as it was so interesting. I will never look at a movie set the same. Great job Wetta.

  • If you love the LOTR franchise or are passionate about behind the scenes stuff, then this is the tour for you. It and #39;s a quick run through of the stuff that the work shop does and you get to handle some of the props. All the staff are professional and friendly. The displays were cool too!

  • Brilliant for film buffs, these guys are incredible. Very good tour, lots of interesting things to see. From the moment you step off the minibus you are transported through a word of creativity and excellence, the level of detail and creativity is mind boggling. If you are a Lord of the Rings or Hobbit fan look nowhere else for film memorabilia, having been to several outlets in NZ this has far the best collection and nearly all created here, from amazing live action statues of all the characters to armour and swords all exquisitly detailed. The workshop tour shows how things are made from casting to final finish, it also has examples of film sets created and the level of detail again beggars belief. There is even a lifesize Orc statue to be selfied with, that and the 3 lifesize trolls from the Hobbit out the front of the Giftshop. They also have memorabilia and creations from a raft of other film, warcraft, Avatar to name a couple. They are also introducing outher tours, The Thunderbirds tour was also just being launched.

  • I loved this tour. We had a really nice guide named Tom who knew just about everything Weta-related and clearly loved his job. He walked us through how props get made and gave us a bit of Weta history. I only wish the tour was longer and that I could've seen more! But, I understand that the artists can't have randos wandering around.
