Know More about this tour

Whales are the most mysterious and fascinating of creatures, and some of the best whale watching in the world is off the coast of Iceland, where the ocean currents create excellent viewing conditions. Climb aboard a whale watching boat operated by an environmentally certified whale watching company in Iceland, and explore the southern part of Faxafloi Bay off Reykjaviks old harbor.

On the 3-4 hour tour you will have the chance to sail out onto the beautiful Faxafli bay, with great views of mount Esja, Akrafjall and the areas surrounding the bay. Common whales and dolphins spotted in Faxafli are: Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, White Beaked Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises.

Whales or Dolphins are seen on more than 90% of summer tours and 80% of winter tours. In the unlikely event you do not see a whale or a dolphin you receive a complimentary ticket to join us again. To ensure that the animals are not disturbed, boats sail at a constant speed towards the whales habitat. This is also part of a sustainability policy that tries to minimize oil use and pollution. Guides have gone through an extensive training program, based on exclusively developed guiding principles. They will provide entertaining and valuable information about the wildlife and scenery. And as a successful whale watching tour is a team effort, the crew works closely with passengers to spot whales, helping you feel an important part of the experience.

Note that you the tour may depart from other harbours such as Grindavk, Keflavk, Sandgeri or Hafnarfjrur (especially in winter 1 November 31 March). This is to ensure that guests have an opportunity to see whales even though sea conditions in Reykjavk are too rough. The tours can run for up to 5 hours with transportation in the event that the tour leaves from other harbours. Whales commonly seen from the other harbours are Orcas, Humpbacks, Blue whales (however they are quite rare), Minke whales, dolphins, porpoises and even pilot whales!

  • Not much out to see, so watched one grumpy humpy for a while. Meh.

  • Whale watching might be great in summer but it is not definitely a winter activity. It was super cold and we did not see any whales. We did see some dolphins and the crew really tried hard to make it interesting but don't think it is worth the trouble in winter, unless you somehow end up being the lucky one.

  • We got to see a whales!!

  • We had a great time out on the water. The boat was large enough to accommodate all who were on board. You need to dress warmer than you think. Outfits were made available to go over your best cold weather clothing . While standing on the bow of the boat, which is the best place to see the marine life, you get wet and very cold, very quickly. The PA system on the boat needs improvement but what we heard was very interesting. We never got to see whales but we got see other aquatic life in abundance. The trip was extended due to no early whale sightings so they tried very hard to give us something special. There was a bar on board but you done feel like drinking due to being out on rough water. Worth the cost over all.

  • Great day with excellent crew - a glimpse of a minky whale but dolphins all around us for ages, fantastic sunrise and scenery.

  • Well organised and they tried their best to find us some whales but on this day we were unlucky. However they do give you a voucher for another trip which is good.

  • Well organised and equipped boat tour.

Great day with several sightings but unfortunately all quite a distance from the boat

  • No whales on my tour. Maybe the end of September is too late to see them? We did see one pod of dolphins. I live in Newport Beach, CA, and the whale watching tours here cost 16/per person, and we commonly see lots of whales on tours year-round. I think that like everything else in Iceland, this tour was overpriced.

  • No whales sighted, not worth the price paid

  • It actually took TWO tries before we were successful, but that wasn't the tour company's fault - it was the uncooperative whales! Our first attempt resulted in no sightings of any of the animals. Because of this, we were offered a complimentary ticket for a second excursion, which we took three days later, and THIS time we were able to spot six minke whales, two of which swam alongside our boat for quite a while.

On both outings, we were impressed with the professionalism of the crew and their passion for the ecosystem. The ship was clean and well maintained, and we truly enjoyed our 3 hours on the water each time. Just a reminder: the company can't control either the weather or the animals, so they can't be faulted for any lack of sightings.
