Overview

White-water rafting on the mighty Zambezi river in Zimbabwe: the heart of Africa. This is rafting at its very best, with the original pioneer if this activity: over 19 rapids, most of which are grade 4 or 5, covering a 23km distance. This is the ultimate African adventure activity and easily the most value for money and memorable experience you could wish for. Starting right at the boiling pot, immediately underneath the magnificent Victoria falls, enjoy an adrenaline pumping ride through the stunning and primeval Batoka Gorge. This is the greatest one day white water rafting experience in the world!! Water levels (not fixed dates), will determine whether you do low or High water rafting, and levels depending - rafting may close April-May.

Know More about this tour

Having booked a white water rafting trip, you will be tingling with anticipation. Its an active day so go easy on the alcohol the night before and have a decent nights sleep. You will be collected from your hotel between 6.30-7am, and it is advisable you have a snack breakfast beforehand (bananas, rusks etc). Wear light clothing that you don't mind getting wet - including footwear. Bring sunscreen and lip balm. Any surplus clothes and valuables will be securely locked away in a storage chest. At 7am you will have an initial briefing from one of our guides. You will then climb aboard the bus and drive about 5km to the top of the gorge. At this point you will put on life-jackets and helmets and be given a paddle. You then have a full safety briefing from the head guide. Following the safety briefing you will begin the steep climb down into the gorge, and then along the bottom of the gorge to the put-in point.

The guide will balance out the boat in terms of positions and you will practice his basic paddling instructions for 10 mins or so. A paddle to the foot of the falls allows an incredible sight of the falls from below. The epic adventure will then begin. You will start your 23km journey over 19+ rapids most of which are grade 4 or 5. Low water season (when rapids are most turbulent), generally runs from August - December, and higher water rafting (usually Jan-mid/end March and again June-July) may clip some rapids and overall distance. Be aware rafting may close April-May - but this is subject to water levels.

Hammer your way through infamous rapids, whose names were conjured to instill fear and trepidation into would-be rafters, The Overland Truck-eater, The Mother, Gnashing Jaws of Death and the final biggy of the day Oblivion. Our experienced guides will steer you on an unforgettable ride through the formidable rapids of the mighty Zambezi. You will not only be enjoying the adrenaline pumping thrill of this exceptional activity, you will also marvel at the stark, sheer beauty and tranquility of the breathtaking Batoka gorge.

You now have a steep climb out of the gorge - you don't need to be superfit at all for this activity, but do need a reasonable level of fitness - just take your time. At the top, cold beers, braai (bbq), fruit, food etc await. You will be reflecting with your fellow rafters on the sheer extraordinaryness of it all. Climb aboard the bus back to town and get dropped of at your hotel between 1430-1500, and no doubt enjoy a well deserved nap. Be sure to catch the film show at Shearwater cafe at 6pm - when you can see incredible film footage and photos of your wonderful day.

Absolutely brilliant trip with Gideon and the team. We were well looked after and it is value for money! Be aware that the gorge climb is pretty steep but such an amazing time going through the rapids. Well worth it!

The best and most challenging activity I have ever done in my life. Highly recommend this to anyone. Staff were professional, friendly and helpful. Please note, that unless you are physically fit, I would not attempt this. It is demanding.
