Koules Fortress

The Koules Fortress is located at the end of the Heraklion’s inner harbor near the Old Harbour Jetty. Primarily built as a defense fortress, this place stopped the Turks from invading for more than 20 years. The fortress was later converted into a Turkish prison for the Cretan rebels. There are many ferries available that will take you to the island. And the views of the waters from the ferry are definitely not to be missed.


Once a habited island, Spinalonga (or Kalydon) is located in the Elounda Gulf along the town’s north-eastern shore. The island and the Mirabello Bay were protected by a defensive fortress during the 16th-century Venetian occupation. Today the visitors coming to this island can tour this massive fortress along with the Turkish bastion and the now-uninhabited leper colony. There are many boats that will take you to this island from Plaka, Elounda, and Agios Nikolaos.

Lion Square & Morosini Fountain
