A Day in Ghent - Perfect 24 Hours Guide
Sitting at the meeting point of Leie and Scheidt rivers, Ghent is one of Belgium’s best-kept secrets. The city’s history, architecture, and art has charmed visitors over centuries. Blessed with medieval majesty and a rich historical heritage, this UNESCO-listed city has many landmarks and a stunning countryside that will keep you hooked long after you have left. Located in the Flemish region of Belgium, travel to Ghent for your next holiday.
The city has plenty of museums and attractions but if you have just one day, here is how you can spend 24 hours in Ghent while on your next trip to Belgium.
How to spend 1 day in Ghent?
Considered one of Belgium’s most beautiful cities, Ghent is canal-laced and can be explored on foot. As you walk around the city, you will be amazed by its extravagant architecture and immaculately maintained the historic center. Start your tour by first visiting the Gravensteen Castle. This is one of the best-preserved castles from the Middle Ages and a small museum located inside the castle features many exhibits. As you reach the top of the castle, the views just keep getting better. Next, walk to the St. Michael’s Bridge for a photo op. Here you can see 3 medieval towns, St. Nicholas’ Church, Belfry of Bruges, and St. Bavo’s Cathedral all in one frame. You can climb up the Belfry Tower to soak in some great views of the city of Ghent. You can even visit the insides of St Bavo’s Cathedral to admire a Renaissance masterpiece, The Adoration of The Mystic Lamb that was brought to life by the Van Eyck Brothers.
A few blocks away from the main cathedral you can visit Graffiti Alley where you can see many quirky wall paintings and street art. As the afternoon comes to an end, head to one of the canals to enjoy a relaxing boat ride. These rides last 40 to 45 minutes and you get to see the city form a totally different perspective. At night, you can visit one of the pubs to try some great beer.
