How to see Madrid in 4 days?
Day 1 -
Experience the royal side -
You can start your 1st day in the city by visiting Royal Palace of Madrid. This 18th-century palace is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family. But today, it is used for hosting only state ceremonies and is partially open to the public. It is the largest palace in entire Europe and has become one of the famous tourist attractions in Madrid. Its tastefully decorated interiors have several paintings, antique furniture, and the world's only complete Stradivarius string quintet. The exterior flaunts exquisite carvings and sculptures. The well-manicured gardens that are adorned with fountains and flower beds are an ideal place to spend some relaxing time.
You can visit Museo Nacional Del Prado - the main Spanish national art museum nestled in the heart of the city. Established in 1819, the museum has the collection of thousands of paintings, drawings, sculptures, historic documents, and prints. Its art collection dates back to the 12th century and is a treat for art-lovers.
Spending an evening at Buen Retiro Park is a great way to experience the beauty of Madrid. One of the largest parks in the city is spread over 350 acres and is nestled at the center of the city. This vast park is home to numerous places including an artificial pond, monuments, sculptures along with a couple of museums. You may also get a chance to witness some event as the park is used for hosting different concerts, programs, and firework shows.
Day 2 -
Witness the uniqueness of Madrid -
When you have only 4 days/3 nights in Madrid, visiting Temple of Debod is a must. This ancient Egyptian temple in Madrid dates back to the 2nd century BC and was originally established towards the south of Aswan in Upper Egypt. But, it was dismantled and rebuilt in Madrid in 1960s. It has been built in the Parque del Oeste and has become one of its kind structure in the country.
Another place where you can experience the true culture of Spain is Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas. Popularly known as Las Ventas, this bullring is one of the unique places to visit in Madrid. The season of bullfighting is from March to October, but it is possible to take a tour of the ring throughout the year.
You would love to visit Gran Vía - a street that never sleeps in Madrid. The name means ‘great way’ in English and you will understand how true that is after you have visited this area. It is a bustling shopping hub full of charming cafes, fine dining restaurants, and numerous bars and pubs. It is home to several majestic buildings that add charm to this area. Spend the evening wandering around and go club-hopping as the night progresses.
Day 3 -
Spend some quality time with your loved ones -
You can enter the 3rd day in Madrid by visiting Zoo Aquarium de Madrid. Spread over 49 acres, this is one of the few places to have giant pandas with thousands of other animals from around the world. It also has a huge aquarium along with the dolphin exhibit on its premises. A great place to spend at least half a day with your kids, visit the zoo as early as possible to avoid the crowd.
Another place to soak in the true spirit of Madrid is Plaza Mayor. This is the main square at the center of the city and its history dates back to 1577. This rectangular shaped building was known by different names in the past. The plaza has become the historical landmark in the city and is a great site to sit and watch the life go by. You can also satiate your hunger here as there are numerous places to eat around.
Puerta del Sol is another plaza only a few blocks away from the Plaza Mayor. The square is home to different historic buildings and monuments and represents the history and development of the city throughout the centuries. These squares are the true identity of Madrid and are a must visit when you have only 4 days in Madrid.
Day 4 -
Dedicate a whole day to visiting the lesser known places -
Spending the 4th day in the city will introduce you to some of the lesser known tourist attractions in Madrid. You can include visiting Basilica of San Francisco el Grande nestled at the center of the city in your Madrid itinerary for 4 days. This Roman Catholic church was designed in the late 18th century and has been dominating the skyline of the city with its majestic dome. The interiors are decorated with paintings and follow the Neoclassical style of architecture.
Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando is also preferred by people who love art, history, and culture. Established as an academy in 1744, this site is home to a museum and an art gallery today. You can spend a whole afternoon looking at the art collection, numerous exhibits, and displays.
You can also consider catching a show or performance at Cardamomo Tablao Flamenco. Located only half a kilometer away from the art academy, it is an ideal place to see Flamenco - a traditional Spanish art performance that dates back to at least 400 years. Though this art form is followed around the world at different theaters, watching it in Madrid is the best way to experience it.
