What to see in Wales in 3 days
Day 1: Ruins, Industry, and Books
If you have read the poems of William Wordsworth, you must be tempted by the beauty of Tintern Abbey that he has featured in most of his works. So, while you are in Wales, start your 72 hours in Wales with a visit to Tintern Abbey. Located on the Welsh bank of the river Wye, Tintern Abbey boasts some of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales. After spending some time in this serene atmosphere, you can head to the bustling town of Abergavenny. Enjoy the views of the Sugarloaf Mountain from this “market town” of Wales and visit the Abergavenny Castle to discover the Norman ruins. Take a walking tour of the market and buy some “Wales special items” for you.
You can move forward to the town of Blaenavon if you want to explore the industrial landscapes of Wales. This hillside town is famous for its iron and coal mines and is one of the World Heritage Sites. Apart from mines, you can also see the primitive railway station and furnaces.
Another small market town in Wales is Hay-on-Wye. A visit to this “town of books” is a must for all the bibliophiles. The town is also called as the National Book Town of Wales. As your first day in Wales comes to an end, it would be a good idea to have dinner beside a pile of books in Hay-on-Wye.
Day 2: Bridges, Bay, and Heritage Railway
Finish your breakfast as soon as possible and step ahead in the direction of the historic market town of Aberystwyth. Located in West Wales, this small town is also abbreviated as Aber. This picturesque town is located by the confluence of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol and is home to some of the unique attractions like Vale of Rheidol Railway, Constitution Hill, Aberystwyth Castle, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, National Library of Wales and more. Also stop at Devil's Bridge of Ceredigion while coming here.
As the sun begins to shine brighter, it’s time to head to the town of Machynlleth. Located in the Dyfi Valley, this small town if full of natural beauty from tip to toe. Hike through the Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve, know about the history of locomotives at Corris Steam Railway Museum, and relax at Abercorris.
You can plan to stay in one of the beautiful resorts on the Cardigan Bay coast in the town of Tywyn on Day 2 of your 3 days/2 nights in Wales. But before having dinner and going to sleep, you would like to see the Talyllyn Railway.
Day 3: Islands, Caves, and Parks
During your 3 days in Wales, you would surely want your 3rd day to be really special. And, to do this, you can visit the town of Harlech to see the magnificent castle of Harlech. After visiting this Edwardian castle, if you have time, you can plan beachside camping at Shell Island. Explore the natural magic by visiting the Llanfair Slate Caverns and hike to the Rhinog Fach.
If the Edwardian Castle of Harlech has tempted you with its majesty, you should not miss stopping at the Caernarfon Castle which is another castle built by King Edward I. On your final day in Wales, take a trip to the island of Anglesey. Famous for its beaches and ancient ruins, Anglesey is the largest island in Wales. Home to the 19th-century Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge, this beautiful island has everything to offer for an avid traveler.
Discover the mysterious marine life at Anglesey Sea Zoo, spend your energy in the activities at GreenWood Forest Park, and know more about the island’s cultural history at the museum of Oriel Ynys Môn. Come back to the city of Cardiff and spend some time in shopping, touring the museums, and enjoying some drinks.
