What to see in 3 days in Wayanad?

Day 1 in Wayanad

Start the day with an early morning safari at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Home to some royal species of animals including the Indian bison, tigers, elephants and even deer, this is the best time to spot these lovely creatures lazing around, especially in the summers! If you are lucky, you may even spot a panther, civet cats and snakes. Wild birds like peacocks, owls, and jungle fowls are some of the many beauties that have made this forest their home.

After the safari, you can enjoy a traditional breakfast at the nearby eateries, before making your way to the Edakkal Caves.

Natural caves in the Western Ghats are one of the major tourist attractions in Wayanad. This is where you can see the paintings and inscriptions that date to, at least, 6,000 BCE! One of the rare carvings, and probably the only ones in the south of the country, a visit here during your 72 hours in Wayanad is a must! Ambukuthi Hills offer spectacular natural views, and since the caves are located on these hills, you can take some time to appreciate the picturesque surroundings here.

The Wayanad Heritage Museum is just a 20-minute drive away from the caves. On the way, you can stop by at Hotel Mount Avenue for a late lunch. After such an active morning, you can spend some leisure time in the heritage museum and have the rest of the day to explore the local areas! If time permits, you can also visit Phantom rock, which is in the same vicinity as the hotel, and Batheri Jain temple.

Day 2 in Wayanad

Begin your second day in Wayanad by losing yourself in the arms of nature. The Chembra Peak is one of the most famous adventure activities in Wayanad, and trekking the entire length takes up almost the entire day! Being one of the highest peaks of the mighty Western Ghats, it is within the protected boundaries, and tickets and permissions must be taken in advance. Equipment and gear is provided nearby. What is interesting about this trek, is its lake. A lovely heart shaped lake will greet you about halfway up the mountain. It is said that this lake never dries up!

It isn’t necessary for you to complete the entire trek. In case you choose to do so, retire for the day after this exhilarating activity. If not, drive up to the Soochipara Falls. You will find a number of restaurants nearby, but it is a good idea to carry some food in case you get hungry after the trek. The Soochipara Falls is a three-tier cascade rock climbing and such activities are available here. After a heavy, scrumptious lunch, you can opt for a drive to the famous Lakkidi View Point, Kalpetta. Winding roads, deep valleys, lush woods and monkeys and birds… this is a great place to unwind after an eventful day! Head to the Pookode Lake next to view the smallest lake in Kerala.

Day 3 in Wayanad

After such an exhaustive second day, it only makes sense to take it easy on the last day of your 3 days in Wayanad. After a heavy breakfast, you can set out to Kuruvadweep, the only island in Kerala that is surrounded by naturally pure water. Birdwatching at its best, those interested in herbs too will have a great time exploring the flora of this island. Water sports are available here. After lunch, visit the Thirunelli Temple, which is almost an hour away. Significant for more than one reasons, the religious and spiritual importance of this temple that is set atop the Brahmagiri Hill, is monumental. Know more about these legends on your visit here!
